Even when naikkars were ruling tanjore the ties between lanka and tamilnadu did not disappear.Portugese were troubling tamil king of yalpanam and he asked help from naikkar kings of tanjore.(might have been maratha king too.not sure).A tanjore army under ledership of varunakulathan entered lanka.It troubles portugese for a long time.In the end the king got killed and varunakulathan continued the fight on his own.He started guerilla warfare.But he was captured and his head was severed.The portugese general was mad at his army for dehumanizing a great warrior like this.

It's true that Portugess were giving trouble to Tamil King of Sri Lanka who is relative Thanjai Nayakkars. These fight had been there for almost 30-40 years. It's even started in the period of Raghunatha Nayakkar's dad period. It may be 1740 to 1770. Not sure. Fortugees's were setted down in Nagapattinam and Thanjai nayakkas wanted to remove them. so they supported Dutch people who got places in Tharangampadi. Thanjai Nayakkas most of the time was spent by supporting these two guys!
Gowthama neelambaran mentions varunakulathan is a real character and was killed by portugese.He says when lankan king sangili asked help of tanjore naikker, the naikker replied "Ini ilangayil mazai poziyum" and immediatly lankan king understood what he meant.Naikker sent varuna kulathan.This is what gowthama neelambaran says.
Ofcourse neelkambaran spins yarns about varunakulathavan falling in love with kings daughter.Dont know how true it is.Varunakulathan continues the war after king sangilis death.Was it because of this love or because he wanted to become king or really he was freedom fighter?
