Hi Friends, For ponniinselvans, a breakout to our omnipresent RajaRajaChola :), hope I will also contribute to your Chola discussions but my knowledge on this subject is very limited at present, let me acquire some knowledge I will surely discuss then with you.
Anyway, this mail is to notify you about my new article on Ratanpur, the capital of the Kalchuris of Ratanpur during late tenth century. You will be happy to hear a Chola connection, when Rajendra's general was on his north India conquest, then it would be a Kalchuri king whom he would have met in Kosalai-nadu. A point for Saktisree probably, would like to hear more about this from you.
Present Ratanpur is famous for Mahamaya temple which is a famous Tantra temple. A big Bhairava shrine adds to the Tantra nature of the temple. There is a unique depiction of Lingodbhava, which I would request you to view.
thank you very much sir for such inscriptional wise details.
as you have mentioned it, the kalachuris of TUMMANA are the kings moved to Ratanpur.
this Tummana kings helped ( or ) wonon the way,by GANGEYA DEVA, the kalachuri king of Chedi to get the title, " TRIKALINGADHIPATHI "( lord of TRIKALINGA )
when isearch the details about the Kosala kings around 10th century,I got a detail that, a king named NAGUSHA belongs to Somavamsa clan, was defeated and captured a part of UTTARA KOSALA, by the king of, Kalachuri of Tummana.
this NAGUSHA's reigning years arenoted as " 1012 - 1016 " who ascended the throneafter Dharmaratha ( 1001 to 1012 ) .
some kings reigned before Nagusha, borea title " sakala kosaladhipathi " ( LORD OF THE WHOLE KOSALA KINGDOM, which contain both UTTARA and DAKSHINKOSALA ),
uttara kosala's capital was " Ayodhya " and " swarnapura " the capital of Dakshin kosala. possibly uttara kosala's northern part were occupied by the neighbours of the kosala kingdom.
( I think that, theRATNARAJA, is the king whowon Nagusha )
The king who was defeated and took as captive withhis brothers,by Rajendra's General was " INDRA RATHA " the successor of Nagusha,
his reigning years are 1016 to 1023.
dharmaratha - nagusha - indraratha, are the sons of Bhimaratha,
all these details as i remember. If need more details pls let me know sir.
Hi Sakthi, lets discuss points one by one. 1. Gangeyadeva was the king of Kalchuris who were ruling at Tripuri, present Jabalpur area. Kalchuris of Ratanpur were a branch of Kalchuris of Tripuri as both the branches claimed their descent from Kokalla who founded the Kalchuri dynasty. Amoda grant mentions that Kamalaraja defeated Utkala and handed over the Lakshmi of that kingdom to his lord Gangeyadeva. Kamalaraja is the Kalchuri king of Ratanpur line who was ruling at Tummana at that time. Best proposition would be that Gangeyadeva started an expedition against Utkala and Kalamaraja supported him in this war. This victory made Gangeyadeva to assume Trikalingadhipati title.
Let me know if you defer in this respect.
@Other members - please let me know if you want this discussion to be moved to personal mails instead of sending to the whole group.
all the scholars said the same, and the TRIKALINGADHIPATHI title of Gangeya deva, after defeating the kosala kingCANDIHARA YAYATI 2, whose reigning years 1023 - 24 to 1060.
kalinga's king was madhukamarnava ( 1019 - 1038),
as the scholars said gangeya deva was the over lord of Mithila ( or TIRABUKTHI mandalaof pala kingdom of bengal )around the year 1020.
To conqueor Both TRIKALINGA AND Tirabhukti, gangeya need to have a Friendliness with Kalachuri's of Tummana.
but There is a need To find when GANGEYA DEVA got this Tittle " trikalingadhipathi "
Itry to locate when Gangeya deva got this title, but I failed at present and Holdthat for a While to Get some Books for reference.
He installed a pillar of victory on the sea shore on the east andgot the title of Tri- Kalingadhipathi. Kamalaraja s/o kalingaraja assisted him in this campaign by defeating the king ofutkala.
kamalaraja took part in gangeayadeva's invasion of Kosala, the name of Kosala king is not definitely said by the scholars. some says It was Yayati II, someone says its Indraratha.
kamalaraja's reign was 1020 to 1045, Gangeyadeva 1015 to 1041, Mahasivaguptha Yayati II 1023-24 to 1060.
It is interesting to note that, in the records of Yayati II, he said that he was elected in asuyamvara as a King of Kosala by the Ministers and Officials of Kalinga, Kongoda and Utkala. In his earlier records heassumed the title of Tri-kalingadhipathi, which controverses with his suyamvara statement.
From thiscontroversy statement, we can assume that Gangeyadeva's attack must be happened Before Yayati II and he also may took part in the same battle to assume the title of Tri - Kalingadhipathi.
These Kalachuris and somavamsis always quarrelled each other and claims victory. KalingarajaF/o Kamalaraja also attacked koasla, for this attack he start from Dahala, later he established Tummana as his capital. which must be happened in between 1000 - 1020.
between these yearsKosala was ruled by 3 kings, Mahasiva guptha Dharma ratha ( 1001 to 1012 ), Mahabava gupthaNaghusha ( 1012 to 1016), Tri rajyadhipathi Indraratha ( 1016 to 1023-24).
Possibly the invasion of Gangeyadeva took place beforeYayati II. Kamalaraja's participation in this battle confirms that The invasion happened after 1020. so its possible to conclude that thisinvasion must be done in between 1020 to 1023-24, whichis the reigning time of Indraratha. His6th ruling yearbanpur copper plates confirms his Kingship in the year 1022. so that this Invasion of Gangeya on Kosal must be happened in between 1022 to 1023.
Whicharethe same years when Rjc went tohis northern campaign.
In the mean time the Malwa king Bhojaraja also Claims" Lord of IndraRatha " in his udaipur prasasthi.
It is quiet Confusingwhenever I try to deal with Rjc's Northern campaign?
It pulls me to the Whole baratha varsha'spolitical condition In the years of 1020 to 1026.All the happaenings are Interlinked together.
