Nagore buddha vihara
  • Dear All

I need one clarification. The article given in Outlook says that the bodh vihara described in Ponniyinselvan was destroyed recently (just couple of centuries back) by jesuits. Is this true?

Atleast the one in Nagai - the choolamani vihara of PS was indeed
destroyed by Jesuists. I don't know whether it was intentional - or
whether they really knew that it was a historic monument.

  • We do learn that the Kapali temple in Mylapore in chennai which was originally on the beach was pulled down by the portuguese and the san thome church was constructed in its place. Therefore the siva temple dating back to the tevaram age had to be relocated in its present location. The exploit at Nagai might have been inspired by a similar adventurism!
