Ramayanam before kamban - 51, Gopurappatti
  • Gopurappatii - Close to Manachhanallur, Azhagiyamanavalam , Uttamarkoil in Trichy.

A Pre RRC temple with UthamaChola inscriptions. ASI board says as built in 980.

intresting epigraphs published by ASI in 1971.

    1. Uttama Chola - 12th  year to Avaneeswaram in pachil of Malanadu - a gift of 5 standing lamps - by sembian madevi -  and

    2. Uttamachola - 16th year - Avaneeswaram - a prabha and padapitha to the metal image of avanisundara in the same temple by Nakkan Vinnarayani, the queen of Uttamachola. The image is taken on procession during Vaikasi Visakam.

    3. The third one is on the installation of Uma Parameswari idol with Prabha and Pada peeta for the same procession.

    4. 21st year of RRC - By Marttandan Uttaman of Avanam - who was administrating Rajasrya valanadu - for offering special bath and food on every Sadayam star every month-and food offering & procession on Avittam star every
    month.

Sadayam is the Natal star of RRC and Avittam is the natal star of Kundavai.

    ASI 1992-93

    5. The same officer- 21st year of RRC - has advised the people enjoying temple lands in Bananallur and Korankudi  to measure paddy . It also advises on feeding 30 Brahmans & Ascethetics  on Avittam day - the star of Kundavaip pirattiyar - one who was born before RRC.

Tamilnadu Arecheology dept  restored the temple in 70-71.

Now only the main structure is remaining w.o Vimanam. Under Devagoshta - there are 2 lines of pannels and they contain many puranic stories.

The Lord who enjoyed royal patronage was without pooja for a long time. His temple complex is  a paddy field now.

One person from Srirangam, bought a house in this village and started a small business  2 years back. Our lord appeared in his dream and told him that he is very hungry. This was repeated for some days. This person searched the village and finally identified the temple. ASI  didnot allow the start of pooja. Most of the locals also donot visit the temple. ( Many villagers  do not encourage opening of old temples if
     a. They own temple lands
     b. If a path is to be created through their field
     c. If their land is affected by increased number of visitors)

But our Sri Vaishnava swami stood to his ground and now the villager who owns the land allows him to go the temple via his place and gives water from his pump set.

The Srivasihnava swami is offering his food to lord every day. He is not
getting any support and whatever cooked in his house is offered and he uses the water from the pumpset for the holy bath.

After Puja , he goes for his business.

There is another siva temple - Pachil Mertaleeswarar - close to this temple. Under TN Arch. This was supposed to be a Pallava temple with Parantaga 1 and RRC inscriptions. The vimanam, avudayar were rebuilt recently. Puja only on Pradosham.

Our Kathie madam's album has one Parvati Parameswara from this village.

There is another vishnu temple, restored recently and kumbabishegam held on Friday. That is another story . That you can refer the link.

For the 12,000 vaishnavas killed in Srirangam during the invation, shrard was performed on every Adi Amavasya in gopurappatti.

Excellent pannels on Ramayana and other Puranas.
  • Excellent Posting Shankar. Thanks

I came to know about Gopurapatti from Stapathi Ve Raman who had worked on this temple and who highlighted it during his presentation in Chemmozhi Conference.

    > For the 12,000 vaishnavas killed in Srirangam during the invation,
    > shrard was performed on every Adi Amavasya in gopurappatti.

Let me enter some sensitive area here.

Few years back writer Sujata wrote in Ananta Vikatan about this massacre. There were violent reactions from certain quarters asking for evidences. It will be hard to get inscription evidences for such happenings - Jallian wallabagh simply retains a mute well and a wall. No inscription to state the cowardly act of General Dyre.

Goburapatti now offers an inscription which indirectly touches upon the srirangam attacks. So it is very important.

Thirukkolakkudi has an inscription which states that the entire Oor was evacuated during the Islamic invasion and resettlement happened during Kampana times.

  • >> There is another siva temple - Pachil Mertaleeswarar - close to this temple.

Only Vishnu temples will be on the western side. "Mertali Iswarar" - here Shiva seems to have occupied Meerku. Rare indeed

  • There are many metraleeswara temples.

    1. Kanchi metrali - sung by Appar and Sundarar. Sambandar also has sung that thevaram is lost. In this temple only Appar has mentioned " kalviyil Karai Illa Kanchi"

    2. Pazhayarai has one metralai and a vadatali. Vadatalai is sung by Appar.

Know some more but could not recollect. will list later.
  • The Kannanur Pochaleeswara temple also has an inscription - soe time bach there was a posting by one of our members on that.
