Old Kallanai
  • -Dear,
In Kumudham, Priya Kalyanaraman wrote a few months back about "Ey
Gouri amman" temple located near Vallam - Tanjore.

    1. Specifically told that Karikalan worshipped this Kali before
    commencing constrn of Kallanai.
    2. Vallathu raja was in 500 AD.

Kudavoil adds: Thanjai was not new town. It was also an old town -
ruled by Muthrayars. Actually it was well developed during Pallavas
as Nandhipuram. Present Thanjai was an outskirt of Nandhipuram!

    Dear Sruthi,

Period of Kanchi Kamatchi temple Vs Ayyappan devotion etc., provide
easy leads. Priya kanyanaraman quoted from old literatures - bit
inscriptions - related things and drew inference that the Vallam
temple was ancient one. I personally checked this with Raja
Bhonsle's elite group of scholars and they confirmed that there is
enough evidence to believe Karikalan worshipped Vallam Kali. They
also told me about Nandhipuram. I have posted the details of
Nandhipuram during Dec / Jan - citing inscriptions which inferred
that the Nandhipuram talked about in PS is actually Thirukkandiyur
and the Golden Palace of AK existed there and NOT in Kanchi and that
Sundara & Vaanavanmadevi's pallippadai temples are located there!
Means After Poompuhar, Nandhipuram played major role in Chozha Rule
like Uraiyur. Nemam is just about 10 Kms west of Thirukkandiyur @
    Nandhipuram.

I am sure you will appreciate the difference between Kamatchi temple
Ayyappa worship and the inscriptional details furnished in the above
    cited mails / quotes.

All the quotes are avl in printed media already. Shall post the
details of source in due course.

  • Dear SB

Long back you wrote about this Ey gowri amman temple and I remember
    our interactions.

I should quickly refer my "Varalatril Vallam" a small but impressive
booklet by...forgot the name of author.

But karikala worship - I am not sure what is the evidence and so on.
May be there is a mention in perumbanatrup padai (?) or somewhere
    else

The pre-chola thanjapuri is an area for research. I plead ignorance
    in this area.
