hello friends as for as the date of existence of manivasaga peruman is i think yet to be resolved. he was the prime minister of Arimarthana pandian of Madurai. he may be before kalabirar rule of tamilnadu i.e. i think 400 some thing like that AD or he may be after parandagan nedumsadiyan a famous pandiya king having aandal and periyazvar as his citizens. he may also lived when the pallavas and pandiyas goes hand to hand with out any disputes over their territories. i think Dr.Jaybee of Agathiyar group can resolve this mystery. with best regards s.anandanatarajan
Thiruvasagam's literary idioms are more modern than Devara Muvaar, though evidences are yet to be resolved, given the language, the maturity of treatment, I favor Manickavasagar being later than the Devara Muvara, that would make him within 100 years before Thriupurambiyam. Perhaps contemporary with Varaguna II Pandya or Srimara Srivallabha.
re Nari - Pari ( Jackal - Horse episodes ) - some Scholars feel the reference is NOT directly to Manickavasagar episode... and in fact that episode itself should have originated from a similar earlier version ... and thus this alone could not be conclusive as there are several other evidences - putting Manickavasagar later to Thevaram trios !
Kindly note a fine point, if I may, about transliterating "k" occuring in between two vowels in Roman script. While for Kannada or Telugu, the -k- intervocalically can be rendered as -g-, it is not so for Tamil. .. Dr. Naa. Ganesan
Saint Manickavasagar's Thiruvilaiyadal - nariyai-p pari Akkal - is sung by Appar as well as Tirumular. Considering this evidence alone, Saint Manickavasagar should be dated any time before the advent of Kalabra period - 1700 BP (300 CE).
'Was he purposely left out?' is one such question. To avoid this sensitive issue, scholars take a very evasive step by making Manikkavasagar arrive late in the scene after everyone has left and gone. But is that the truth? - Dr. Jaybee
