Dear Nanda, Please forgive me for differing with you, but Brando's looks are 100% working class, not at all 'playboy' - they never have such beautiful biceps. Vivien Leigh is definitely not helped by Stanley, in fact her weak hold on reality is completely severed, she crashes into total schizophrenia. A heartbreaking performance, her best - better than Scarlett. Tennessee Williams, the playwright, said that Blanche was himself! Kathie
I must really watch this movie, thanks Venkat and Kathie!! My only Vivien Leigh film was Gone with the wind, which i do not watch now as I consider it somewhat racist. My eternal english faves would fill too many pages to write here...short list..almost all of Hitchcocks and all of Disney, all of Rodgers and Hammestein musical classics (south pacific is special), all of Stephen King's books made into movies(Shawshank Redemption is VERY special), and so many miscellaenous...
Dear Venketesh, My Idol was Olivier, so I read everything about the two of them. V. changed the spelling of her name, thinking Vivien was more feminine than Vivian. She was embarrassed by her very large hands and someone said: don't try to hide them, that will only draw attention to them. Yes, she suffered terribly from ManicDepression, could be so aggravating that Olivier said he nearly threw her across the room, once; and she died of TB [!] self-neglect, in the '70s, I believe. Only in her 50s. A very sad life. Kathie Wonder what she was doing way down in Ooty, from Bengal?
a street car named desire i never watched the movie. i generally keep away from depressing stuff. but one thing about tennese williams who authored this play i would never forget the way he died. he was using some eye drops on himself and the lid slipped and went into his open mouth. he choked!!
Hi Kathie, Perceptions differ. So far I have only seen 3 movies with Brando. Street car named desire, Apocalypse Now & Godfather. Did not get the opportunity to look at other ones.
