    ... and there was a contreversy when the cm relaid the foundation
    stone for it.

    same way in warangal 400 pillars were removed by asi for
    maintainence. shold have been re installed by now.

    a 1000 pillared hall is a major investment and mostly in a well
    populated centre. all above are major temples
    thiruvanaikoil, thiruvarur, chidambaram, thriuvanamalai, kanchi ( all
    are bootha sthalangkal)
    with kanchi and thiruvarur competing for prithvi.
    rameshwaram is a jyothir linga
    madurai thirunelveli are ambalams for natraja

    srirangam is the KOVIL for vaishnavites

    but vijay tell me more about kudumiyan malai. how does it fit in?

    Dear Venkatesh
             Did you ever count the pillars in so called 1000 kal mandapam? You will find only 250 pillars. That means it is 1000 x (1/4)kal mandapam. Our old Tamil people think always big, and name it in a big way... That must be the reason. Similarly 100 kal mandapam has 25 pillars. Please Check this.

    MAY BE 100 KAAL IS 100 LEGS & 1000 KAAL IS 1000 QUARTERS.

    FOR DEAR MEMBERS LIKE "KATHIE" : " KAAL " IS A PUN IN TAMIL LANGUAGE.

    The 1000 kaal mandapam in Srirangam has only 960 pillars. The tall
    pandal during Vaikunta Ekadasi festival is built with 40 tall coconut
    tree trunks making a totl of 100.

    The term 'sahasra' or 1000 is used in many instances to denote a large
    number, not necessarily exact 1000.

       I remember it was 953 pillars and the pandal built by 47 coconut tree trunks in Srirangam. Please correct me if I am wrong. In most of other places 1000 kal mandapam has 250 pillars only. We have a list of temples where the mandapams are. This may also be checked, please.

    i think we should gather info on these 1000 kaal mandapams.

    in fact i crossed chidambaram today and intended to worship there, but unseasonal and cyclonic rains prevented me from going in.

    have posted 2 photos in the new folder called 1000 pillared halls.
    i request members to search for photos of other halls mentioned and post them too.
