Staff Reporter http://www.hindu.com/2009/02/23/stories/2009022358810400.htm CHENNAI: Babies born in Corporation maternity hospitals will be given a one-gram gold ring each if they are given Tamil names, announced Mayor M.Subramanian. On production of the birth certificate to the Corporation, the parents could receive the ring, he said.
Speaking at the council meeting on Saturday, he said that the Corporation had also taken initiative to improve the healthcare of the weaker sections.
This includes installation of ECG facility in all dispensaries of the civic body, starting of laboratories in dispensaries and laparoscopy equipment in eight 24-hour hospitals. Centralised oxygen storage facilities would be set up in eight zones at the cost of Rs. 40 lakh to provide uninterrupted oxygen to hospitals. He said that maternity hospitals in all 10 zones would be provided equipment to the tune of Rs. 14 lakh. Operation theatres would be upgraded at the cost of Rs.1.5 crore.
The Tondiarpet Communicable Diseases Hospital would be modernised at the cost of Rs.13.53 crore.
you would have been eligible ilavarasi but if they see your first name they would have grabbed it back!!
like you say mummy daddy nu koopidara kolanthaikala pudichu POTA sattathula 6 maasam ulla thallaama iruntha sari
but then would all this make the power of tamil grow? its almost a crime when the government exempts movies with tamil names from paying taxes. how much loss to the exchequer.

At least for Tamil Film names if they give ok, They give for Sanda Dasavatharam Shivaji Alibaba
Cha... I missed gold coin...is the rule eligible if your born in 1985?
So, How will you classify a name as a tamil Name? Venkatesh in tamil can be written with both tamil and sanskrit characters? Birth certificates are mostly in English!!!! Most of the Christians will be ruled out of this gold scheme as they will definitely add 1 anglo-roman sounding name as a part.
Mohammed can be written with Both Persianic sounding and tamil sound mugamad or muhamed.Looks like a means of fooling people to say that are encouraging tamil names. So muslims will be automatically ruled out too. Now, who will certify that a name is Tamil name or not? So one more way for corporation employees to solicit bribes.

You and I will not qualify because of the sanskrit bits....interestingly I have come across Christians with the name Sridhar and have asked them for the meaning of their names...
is allahpitchai tamilname or not? Allah Rakha Rehman will translate to that...
If only we invest that money in providinfg the children good nutrition and vaccination rather than these political ploys as you rightly said...will only earn corporation officilas more booty!

I doubt it sir. sometimes the tamil part of their name is more original than our names. devasahayam, jebarathinam, etc.

Well, to add on 'Nandini' from our very own PS is of Sanskrit origin. Meaning It means having bliss, enjoying bliss. A person bearing this name is believed to spread happiness all around.
Look at the way the strain can impose on the economy, this is an irresponsible act during times of distress. Education / culture emphasis pannunga, thamizh additional degree iruntha Govt tax break kudukatum. Thamizh padikka vendum, thamizh valara vendum, athukkaga pethukittu thangam vanga venum sonna nambo makkal vere directionla think panna arambichiduvanga...
Intha jenmathile ellaryum pichaikaranakkama vida mattanga pola irukku...
If someone with a name like Kamil Zvebil can be a tamil scholar what keeps others with any name from being so. Wonder what they are trying to prove exactly. Morever lots of people have two names, or even three.
An interesting tit bit... N.Ganeshan sir wrote this in Min Tamil Group "Dr. Jean-Luc Chevillard scanned the bibilio of late KV Zvelebil from J. Vacek (ed.,) Tamulica et Dravidica (Coll. of KVZ articles). thought may be useful to you. Look at how many papers he has written on Bharatiyar into his kanguage, Czech, English. BTW, his daughter's name is: Bharati Kannammaa."
