Really? or more realistically, mars looks red when observed from earth. Could that be the reason?
I believe that most of our astronomy is based on observation (which is probably why the earth is at the center of all planets) over an extended period of time.
most ancient civilisations including rome and grece had seen mars. sinceit has an elliptical orbit it comes ver close sometimes. rome and greece evenmade mars the god o war because of its red fiery colour.

mars is a visible planet. clearly so. we can se it too. as a red spot. to distinguish it from its neighbours planets dont twinkle and stars do. upto jupiter and saturn our people had observed and plotted the astrolgical charts. so history of mars is as old as the hindu astrology.
Please ont stress the 2500 years - at least among us people who readily admit that our ancestors were great mathematicians and engineers. It sounds like a sign of our underestimation of our ancestors' mathematical abilities. Its the same thing when we say RRC built such a massive temple THOUSAND years back - sounding like as if their engineering skills were lesser than our current generations'.
Actually their knowledge, am beginning to believe were far more superior and sustainable than ours.
