Kolar, previously known as Kuvala-pura, was the capital of the Ganga dynasty who ruled in many parts of Karnataka until the 10th century. It was successively occupied by the Cholas, the Hoysala and the Vijayanagara rulers and later changed hands from the Marathas to the English and then the Mysore kings.
The ancient Kollarama Temple was renovated by Rajendra Chola around 1040 AD. It is built in the Dravidian or south Indian style. The gateway is richly-carved with scrollwork and volutes containing mythological figures. The temple is a centre of Shakti worship, a cult of ancient origins of the divine creative force of the goddess. The deity in the sanctuary was Mahishasuramardini, known as Kolaramma. This had replaced the original image of Kolarammma. The image has been replaced again by Saptamatrika figures.
Interesting info.Happy to know that Chozha inscription in Kolar still exists.Dear friends do we loose inscriptions and other details due to the setting up of granite quarries and forming new residential areas? Please share your opinion.
-90% or more of inscriptions available are in temples and most relate to temple grants. we should look up on big temple inscriptions and record the percentage of non- temp from the info gathered from the kalvettus except for some punishment details we cant infer the ancients used kalvettus as a medium for recording history for future generations. infact a lot more has been gathered from the copper plates found intact than the kalvettus. we happenned to see a broken pillar in the basement of the tanjore museum. kudavoil told us it was from the chola palace. I suppose SPs can tell us the details on it. venketesh
