Coming to the numbers ... I have no clue as why this indifference... but whenever I come across 900 in tamil, i remember one incident my father told me.
My father retired as chief cashier from Uco bank some 6 years back. around 8 years back when he was doing his rural service in a village near arakkonam, this peculiar situation occured. A village woman wanted to withdraw money and gave a withdrawal slip, and as per the slip the cashier gave her 100Rs. There was a dispute and the matter came to my father.
the lady argued that she wanted 'ayiram rooba' and the cashier is cheating her by giving only nooru rooba. The slip has only Rs.100 written in it. When questioned, the lady said, 'yaara yematha pakkareenga...pona varam thollayiram rooba edukka 9 pakkathula rendu cipher poda sonneenga. ippo ayiram rooba venumna mattum moon cipher poda sollareenga. enna emathareengala?"
Hi all, I have been a silent observer of all the discussions going on here(might remain so). But since a question is raised about which every one of us will ponder over for our life time, i have a guess for that question. If wrong please correct me..
90 is 10 short of 100(nooru) or IOW 90 is the preceding multiple of 10 for 100, so it is thonnooru(thol+nooru) 900 is 100 short of 1000(aayiram) so thollayiram
After that the series 9000, 90000 all follows which are all self explanatory....
By the way, I am Vasanth from Tiruvannamalai, working in a IT company in Banglore presently..
