PS Facts and Fiction - Kundavai Pirattiyar - Part I
  • Dear sundar
Parthiban, Vikraman as well as Kundavi in Parthiban kanavu were
    imaginary characters.
Infact, much of Parthibhan kanavu - characters as well as events -
were Kalki's imagination unlike PS in which many facts blend with
    fiction.
I may not be able to write much, if I begin a fact and fiction series
    on Parthibhan kanavu:-)
  • > There is also another Kundavai before this, Vikraman's lover and
Narasimha pallavan's daughter as mentioned in "Parthiban kanavu".
    >
    > ( I am not sure whether it is a historical fact or imagination of
    Kalki)

    Hi Gokul,

I dont think its an imagination of kalki. I guess he used the correct
historical fact. I have read it somewhere else(not in PK, may be in
intamm....) that a chola prince married narasimha pallavan´s
daughter and her name is also Kundavi.
  • Hi Guhan
You are partially right in stating this - Narasimha did give his daughter
to one of the chola princes. But neither the name of this pallava daughter
nor the name of the price who married her are known to us.
I have read several "Pallavar Varalarus" - one by Dr.Rajamanickanar,
another by Mylai seeni venkatasami - none of them give this detail with
    names.
Infact I don't remember what is the exact evidence upon which scholars
deduced that narasimha gave his daughter to one of the chola princes.

Hence I think the naming is still Kalki's imagination - unless further
    proof is furnished.

Narasimha was under severe pressure in the north from Pulikesi - he did not
want troubles to erupt in the south and hence he should have strengthened
his relationship with chola. It is purely a marriage that happened for
    political gains.
  • In SS also, Maamallar's daughter is named as "Kundhavi".

    Does this has any relevance?

    Suji
  • Of course. Both are the same Kunthavai. In SS she is a kid. In PK she is
grown up and becomes the heroine ;-).

(And now, dont ask if the Narasimma Pallavar in PK is the same as the one in
    SS. Jus Kidding!)
  • I will not ask.. since, I have not completed SS.. I don't have a full copy of the same, and I am reading it on Kalki only..

And, I have not read PK also...

So, I will raise such foolish questions after I complete both SS & PK...

I think the chronological order by periods is SS, PK and then PS. Am I right?.. Are there any other novels of Kalki, other than these, that shall precede or succeed SS, PK & PS?... Some body, throw some light on this....

    Suji
  • S.. I shall... (but I am trying out to get the same here itself with some of my friends)

However, can u leave ur address and contact no if any of ur parents... so that I can do accordingly?

    Regds / Suji
  • Hi gokul,

Mannicchukanga, Etho aarva kolaaru-la ularitten :-) U should be
correct.....I tried to find the source where I read that, but couldnt
find that( may be i got this information in some discussion forum :-
    (...)

I have some questions.I guess u can clarify that.

How many children Rajaraja 1 had?? only 2??

And, whats the name of Rajendra 1´s mom?? Is it really vanathi??

    Thanks in advance,
  • Hi Friends,

I have discussed this Kundavai matter with Dr.
Kalaikkovan today. He said that the name Kundavai
originated from Andhra. The kundavai in PK and SS
(Daughter of Narasimma varmar) was a fictitious
character and there are no hints in any inscription or
copper plate regarding the sons and daughters of
    Narasimma varmar.

There were three Kundavais in Chola history. The first
one (her full name was Veeman Kundavai) came from east
chaalukkiyas and married to a chola king. She was the
grand mother of Sundara chola and she only brought up
Sundara cholan in his childhood. The second and third
kundavai were the sister and daughter of Rajaraja
    cholan respectively.

    All clear?
