vanthiyathevan trip
  • Hi
we can have one beach meeting in first week of april to decide
    logistics.
but the ease with which logistics and plans were changed during the
easy trip when dropping out happened tells me that any size is viable.

people evincing interest in may vanthiyathevan trip till now.

  • Venkat count me in too....

since its in May why don we plan some simple & well explained trip
for our own or siblings' kids? It might kindle the hostorical fire in
    the kids...
if we do this then it will make them to explore themselves and learn
history with interest rather than as a boring subject...

    Just my thot...
  • Good idea Indumathi
but antha maathiri trip inname monthly once irukkumnu I think.
you can always join up in that too.

you know looking around fort st. george with PS sriraman guiding us
would take a full fore noon session.

  • SPS ? Please join this too.
  • Dear Indu

  • Hi

the following is what swetha has compiled.
if people are willing to cut one monday this month end ( may 1 is a
tuesday)it can be a comfy 4 day trip and no night travel.

Here is the itinerary she put together. See if it is viable in the
first place and if she has covered all the places.

    Day 1 : Chennai - ECR - Chidambaram - veeraanam -Kadambur -
    kudanthai- Thanjavur - Night Halt.
    Day 2 : Thanjavur - Thiruvaiyaru - pazhuvur -Thirumazhapadi -
    Thanjavur - Night Halt.
    Day 3 : Thanjavur - Thiruvarur - Nagappattinam - Vedaranyam -
Kodikkarai - Karaikkal - Night Halt
    Day 4 : Karaikkal - Tharangampadi - Thirukkadaiyur - Thiruvenkadu -
    Chidambaram - ECR - Chennai

Day 3 is cramped. We should wind up quickly on Day 2 so that we start
early on Day 3, complete Thiruvarur and Nagai, take lunch in Nagai
    and then proceed to Vedaranyam.

chidambaram, tanjore and karaikal we have people to get us good
    lodging.logistics may not be tough.
  • Sorry I am not very comfortable with the maps.

But is it possible to squeeze in THIRUKOVILOOR into this schedule?

Also perhaps a Halt at Mammalapuram for a brief while would be comical
    ;)

I cant agree more else with the schedule..!!

    Kind Regards,

    Balaji
  • tirukovilur- no.
we dont even go near it.
    but mahabs yes

I will try my luck next time.
  • Hi Friends,

    - is everyone invited ?

    ....

  • hi Shiva

    welcome on board!
our trips are a group effort.
only accounts is handed over to some soft ware brain like sathish or
    sivaram.
the brain storming is still on.
keep observing the group activities and you will know the details

  • Venkat, Can we have the trip planned for April 21, 22
or May 5, 6 or May 12, 13? That will enable me to be
    there.... :-)
  • Can we meet somewhere this weekend and discuss the logistics?
  • Hi Vk

this was swetha's plan. actually i was hoping we could do it in
    august.
we may not be able to retrace vanthiyathevans steps unless we have
four days.kodikarai along with the rest of the places is what
    icausing the hassle.

alternately a two day tanjore program would be just as good.
leave by luxury bus rathimeena on friday night.reach tanjore. hire a
    vehicle there.
    1st day
half a day for big temple. afternoon pazhuvur, malapadi and
    thiruvaiyaru
2nd day thiruvarur nagapattinam and back. or kadambur veeranam
kumbakonam and back take the bus to chennai.

in the above 2 day trip which can be fitted any weekend we touch
most of the places with chola and ps importance.
  • Good idea.
  • Good. Probably we can meet sometime ( may be in
Elliots beach for a change! ) this week and
    discuss....
  • Me too not sure about my participation during the 28 to 1st May trip,
as I have to attend a function on 30th April, which cannot be avoided.
correcta nadu center datela thana function varanum...if it had been
28th or 1st, I could have cut short the trip by one day, but in the
    middle :)
  • Hi Sathish
think this following itinery though jampacked would work out

friday night- take a rathi meena bus to kumbakonam. we can stay
there. (swetha and sps have immense clout in that town. so they can
arrange things over the phone too.)

saturday morning- travel north. see kadambur, veeranam eri and the
temple beside thath and travel back to kumbakonam for lunch. start
for tanjore see the big temple and if possible what temple kalki
meant as singala nachiar koil back to kumbakonam and sleep. those not
tired can see the artha jamam at kumbeshwarar. we could even have a
group discussion on the steps of the maha maham tank.

sunday morning. move thro peralam- thiruvarur- nagai- kodikarai and
    back by the night.
we can leave pazhuvur and mazhapadi which are not directly visited by
    the charecters.

the advantages for the trip are:
    only 2 days.
can be fitted any weekend suitable to all of us.
costs will be slightly more than half of a 4 day trip

    think about it.

  • Hi

can we all zero in on one weekend convenient to all in may.
seems lotsa guys may not be able to make this in last week of april?
    venketesh
  • yes Venkat. You are correct. Before the trip shall we meet somewhere. My
    Mobile number is 9884061826.
Have you gone to any trip like this before?
  • Hi

If we are not going on may 1st we could all have a meeting after the
new year to discuss the date and modalities.
    is it okay?
before that I request sps to analyse the travel plan and decide if it
is possible to do in 2 days.
  • its amazing.. inspite of the arrival of TV.. the old school folks still
prefer radio... Chandrasekar's yorker!! Never seen him live but saw BBC
    footage.. an amazing cricketer.
BTW there is always one innings Chepauk regulars cant stop talking about...
Where u in the stadium during GRV's 96 against West Indies? My father, his
cousins(about 7 in number) were all there. Must have been magic.
  • I meant GRV's 97..sorry about that. Typo
  • > Where u in the stadium during GRV's 96 against West Indies?

    Hi rahul
I was.and it was the second match i was seeing. earlier one had been
a ranji final, bombay vs tamilnadu.
i nearly cried when everbody else got out and grv stood like a rock.
first innings both teams scored 200 and 210 i think.
venkat raghavan was dropped and was 12th man.
andy roberts was then the worlds fastest.
when india won somebody in B stand lit a fire and i still remember
the fire truck racing on the green field.

i think we lost the series 3-2 though we won the madras match.
i used to be a great lover of cricket but I quit playing when my
class mate in school started playing for india( when he was in school)

  • Hi

    thats sps

now we have more than one way of accomplishing vanthiyathevans ttrip
    in two days.
more people will opt to join in a 2 day trip

the rathimeena from chidambaram starts at 11.30 pm.

so easy to reach without pressure.

so we can see artha jamam there. chidambaram is the last temple to
    close by tradition.
also rathimeena has busses from nagapattinam and karaikal too in the
night. so it wont be a problem.

chidambaram we could try the annamalai university guest house too.

in one brain storming session we can finalise the details.

alternative plan seems more attractive because we never tread the
    same route twice.
but we need to reach kodikarai with a lot of light
  • We have seen Tanjore more than once... Let us reach
places we cant go by ordinary means..
  • Hi

big temple wont take much time if we are not going to the upper
    chambers.
an according to sps plan 2 we would be spending the evening only
    there.
and we would faithfully be following the route vanthiyathevan took.

however malapaadi and pazhuvur is off the route and roads are at best
mediocre. we could do that with an exclusive tanjore trip.

on day 1 morning we can spend more time in the temples veera
naarayana, kadambur and gkc.and see veeranam after 12 noon when
    temples are closed.
  • hi mr.venketesh;

Even now when my father and his cousins get together and chat about cricket
the GRV innings is always mentioned. They even remember the headlines in The
Hindu the next day.I saw a few GRV innings through the BBC footage, it was
amazing. And the fact that he was so humble about his skills speaks volumes
    about the man.
I remember reading an article written about GRV by Sunil Gavaskar, it goes
like this "....he reached his century with a now familiar late-cut. He then
shyly lifted his bat and doffed his cap in acknowledgement to the crowd and
his team-mates. It was a quintessential Indian reaction to fame, shyness..."
I read these lines 6 years ago, i have forgotten the magazine i read it in
(it was Sportstar i think) but these lines are sort of burned into my memory
    forever.
  • OK. Let us have more time at GKC. Probably we can look
around for traces of the palace of RJC.
  • Hi Friends,

Looks like the trip itinerary is almost frozen.

Now, shall we nail down the travel date.......

I propose April 21st and 22nd ie, around 15 days from now.

If that weekend is not possible then we may have to push the travel
date to May 12th and 13th.

So friends, please vote for your convenient date for travel. This
will help the outstation members(like me !!) to plan our travel to
    chennai, well in advance.
  • Hi Suganya

the trip itinerary is not yet frozen. the places to be seen are.
the plan sps put forward chidambaram to tanjore to kodi to
chidambaram has the least number of kilometres and is most efficient.
    i have only one apprehension.
the overnight travel to chidambaram ( which I do once a month) is not
    all that long.
the bus leaves thiruvanmiyur at 11.30 and reaches chidambaram at 4am
spoils your sleep both ways.and since its a two day trip we need to
be all the more keen and alert.

  • Both the dates are OK with me!
  • Hi Venkatesh,
I joined this e-group yesterday, and is it too late now to join this
trip you guys are planning? I am placed in bangalore but my hometown
is chennai. If the trip is in the second set of dates, in mid May,
instead of the end of April (23rd..weekend), I would like to join
in. I am attending a wedding in kumbakonam and going on a small trop
of temples in and around kumbakonam from 23-may 1. Pl let me know,
  • -Hi Anitha
    welcome home.

you will find this group great.

we have lots of people joining us for the trip from bangalore,
    suganya, deepa etc.

its not too late to join now. and whenever in chennai check the goup
for informal meetings and one day trips.
  • Hi Venkat and others,

I am unable to confirm my participation now, as I would have joined a new
    company by then.
I am not sure whether they will ask us to work on saturdays, so I will
confirm it by the end of this month
    after joining there.

Also, guys coming from Bangalore can directly go to Tanjavur or
    Chidambaram!!!!.
