A stranger walks with a message in a hostile atmosphere...enters a hostile castle...by his own wit..... learns valauble information....it may be chance it may be fate.... makes an oppurtunity from that by banging his horse on Ilayaranis pallakku......uses his wit and inteligence on Chinna paluvetarayar....saying his brother said to deliver the message in person.....delivers his message and gives a plausible explanation.....finds out he has lost the other message.....makes a trick and gets it from chinna paluvettarayar....gets out from his grip....gets to nandhini(chance)...resists her charm....into the nilavarai....(chance) resists the desire of worldly wealth...saves his freind....escapes from thanjavur....just because sendhan doesnt want to lie jumps into the river....fights Ravidasan and escapes.....tricks the dance company and disguises as Kamsan and meets IsanaPandithar and meets Kundavai and delivers the message!!!!!

Ok, I believe you are mixing Vanthiyathevan, Kunthavai's real life husband with Vanthiyathevan, the character. When I called Vanthiyathevan a bumbling idiot, it was the character I was referring to. The character as portrayed by Kalki. Frankly, to my view, he still seems to be someone who is very brave, very loyal but still bumbles from incident to incident, mostly by chance. Again, this is the character we are talking about, not the historical personality :)
Nanbargale........ Interesting Fight ... Really a person (ok... Character of Shri.Kalki) who moves all canot be taken as a person who does all with his Luck; In his Character also he is so loyal..... So He should not be termed as Idiot. But Whoever read this great book, loves Vathiyathevan. So out of love towards that character Arun can 'chellama' term him as Bubbly lucky idiot. :p

a great strength of Kalkis writing which is making his charectors as human as possible. Even arulmozhi enters Thanjavur as Vanadhi's Yanaipagan... That was the very fact why everyone loves his charectors as they have identified themselves with one charector or more...
I agree.. why should the discussion stop with this?:) the biggest strength of this group is to discuss even fairly controversial things in a very reasonable manner. :)

I jumped into volume two without rereading volume 1. So please wait a bit before I answer your Q. Also, as I read volume 2, and find more instances of bumbling idiocies :p I shall let you know. I still believe if I were Karikalan, I would have sent someone more like Aazhwarkadiyaan Nambi as a thoothu.. rather than an impetuous, immature but brave and loyal friend. :)
One more purpose was to meet Kundavai as she has asked for a loyal spy. In the fourth part Karikalan mentiones(during the hunting) to VD, that he purposfully sent him to Kundhavai so that his loyalyty wavers. Karikalan could have thought that he lacks certain things to become perfect spy and might have sent him, after all practice makes man perfect.
Venketesh, though he loses the mail, the way he gets back the mail from chinna pazhuvettaiar is the most interesting thing isn't??/
No problem if you call the real VT as idiot. We dont know much about him. He belongs to real Kundhavai and history. But Kalki's VT is fully ours. We know most of him. Enters Kadambur through his quick thinking, meets big heads of the kingdom, comes to know about conspiracy for the crown againgt Karikalan. Also sees Manimekalai. 6. Leaves Kadambur to Tanjavur, meets Nandini for the first time and trick her in to giving the Pazhvur Mudhirai(Actually who tricks who here). 7. Enters thanjavur using the Mudhirai, meets Sundhara gives the mail addressed to him by tricking CP that he was asked by PP to give the mail to Sundara. 8. Uses his quick wit to escape the CP's while giving a message to Sundara(Abayam Abayam). 9. Realizes that he has lost the mail to Kunadai to CP. 10. Uses his briallance again to get the mail back. 11. Escapes from thanjavur to pazhaiyarai after the encounters with Nandini, PP and Kandhamaran. 12. Meets Kundavai at Kundanthai, encounters the prank she plays on Vanathi. 13. Enters Pazhaiyarai disguised as Kamsan. 14. Meets Kundavai in the most romantic encounters. Describes his adventures. 15. Kundavai gives the task of getting AM to india from Illangai.
Book 2:
1. Meets Poongozhli at Kodikari. 2. Escapes the PP's soldiers and with the help of Poongozhli escapse's to Lanka. 3. Meets Periya Vellar's army and gets jailed for showing the Pazhvur Mudhirai. 4. Rescued by Azlwarkadiyan and traverses srilanka to meet AM. 5. Meets AM and gives the mail given to him by Kundavai. 6. VD, AM and Azlwarkadiyan all gets rescued by Mandhakini from the Pandya conspirators. 7. Witnesses AM rejecting the Lanka kingdom given to him. 8. While travelling back has the best fight in the book with AM. 9. AM decides to go to Thanjavur instead to Kundavai and to Kraikalan. 10. VD get caught in the Arab traders. 11. VD escapes the ship, but the ship catches fire. AM and VD escapes the ship and rescued by Poongozhli. 12. AM get Chikengunya?????
Book 3:
1. VD, AM and Poongozhli comes to kodikarai. 2. VD uses his brillance to make AM, Poongozhli and Aumdan escape Ravidasan. 3. Travels to pazhaiyarai, vows not to lie here after. 4. Meets Nandini again at the forest with the small kid, with the Pandya conspirators. 5. Enters pazhaiyarai tricking Bhujangan that he is fortune teller. 6. Gets jailed for fighting with Vaithiyar magan, as he accueses VD of Nandini's spy. 7. Meets Kundavai at the pathala sirai(one of my most favorite scenes), where she tells him her love. 8. Sent for the task of trying to stop Karikalan from going to Kadambur.
Book 4:
1. Meets Karikalan where Kadamaran accueses him of attacking from the back. 2. VD gets an appaluse from Azlwarkadiyan for not telling the truth and also a lie to Karikalan to escape the Kandamaran's accusation. 3. Along with Azlwarkadiyan unearths the plot to kill Karikalan at Kadambur. 4. Uses Manimekalai to shadow Karaikalan whereever he goes. 5. Have a nice long conversation with Karikalan about his love for Nandini, how he feels about VD, Kandamaran and others around him, the feeling that he his going to die.
Book 5:
1. Get accused for killing Karikalan. 2. Jailed for the same. 3. Escapes from the jail with Karuthiruman. 4. Kundavai get the last mail Karikalan wrote to her before his death in which he praises. 5. Gets injured by taking the spear meant for Amudan. 6. Saved by Azlwarkadiyan, Poongozhli and Amudan from the injury. 7. Rescues Manimegalai from the River and gets caught again. 8. PP takes the blame for killing Karikalan to save VD. 9. PP praises VD to Azlwarkadiyan and tells him that he did not kill Karikalan. 10. AM with the help of VD crowns Aumdan. 11. Meets Kundavai to inform of CP fate. 12. Manimekalai dies on seeing VD.
