Location&Direction:This temple is located in Mayavaram-kuttralam road,where one can see this temple Gopuram at the left hand side. This temple is situated 2 miles west of Mayavaram.
Legend says that Rudran,ayan,ari- all three of them worshipped Lord margasahayeswarar at this place,hence the name Muvarur and as time went on it got transformed to Muvalur. Goddess durga killed Demon Mahishasuran and came to this sthalam and worshipped Margasahayeswarar to regain her old form.There is only a mention of this sthalam at some places on thevaram(no separate songs). Thirukalyanam function between siva and parvathi is celebrated every year (ayila star) in a grand manner at this temple.
TN Government is paying about Rs. 10000/- aid for wedding occasion of the under-previleged (now raised to Rs. 20000/- I think) and CM Dr. Kalaignar has named this GRANT after MUVALUR (Moodatti) RAMAMIRTHAMAL .. an Unmarried Elderly Freedom fighter of Yesteryears.
In one of the Weddings, he observed ( I recall):;
Moovalur Ramamirthammal was to have been married in her 14th year and just prior to that heard of NETAJI and attended a meeting of Indian National Army of Netaji. She quit the family bondings, joined his Army, and was one of the Women-Commandos faught in Burma (Miyanmar) and ended her life without marrying as an elderly Women ..
Also remember to have read in the Wedding of his brother-in-law Dakshinamurthy's family (recently - about 6 months back)::
There were two women freedom fighters from the erst-while Thajnavur District (which is now Naagai - Thiruvarur - Thanjai) and apart from Ramirthammal, his grand-mother was another !!
MUVALUR, near Kuthalam is also the Birth place of one of the Gurusannidhams of Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam !
