Hinduism and CRY wolf - PS group and a problem.
Let me just add my tuppence worth. I am absolutely against any censorship. If a bunch of educated individuals as exist in this group can't have a rational discussion on even the most "touchy" topics, what hope is there for any rationa…

Agree Yuva. My only concern is with the "If it is found to be true" and the modalities for doing so. If excavations were carried out, would it reveal anything? Were other things buried along with the ashes in those days?

Thanks for posting this. Certainly very interesting. I wonder though if excavations can prove much since this was purportedly built over his ashes.

SOLAR ECLIPSE
Thanks SPS. We were driving to bangalore from Mysore this morning and the roads were refreshingly free because I heard that people hesitate to venture out during eclipses !!:) (Sometimes "mooda nambikkaigal" do help!)

casteism in TN and its complexities: boon or bane?
Hmm so let me see, you want to maintain and Indian "culture" where caste hierarchy is kept in place?I find that quite spooky, to say the least. I would rather get rid of such a "culture" as the Bengalis and Keralites seem to have…

Agree with this and possibly, they have had significant contributions through the 19th and 20th centuries (at least first half of the 10th century). One thing I admire is the lack of a feudal attitude at least among the educated. Unlike our habit of…

I don't think you can call it bigotry exactly Venketesh. Bigotry deals with hatred for something. The Bengali or Tamil love for their culture or language is smugness rather than bigotry. I would use the word bigotry with great care. Quite a few…

I agree that Bengalis tend to be very proud of their culture (somewhat like us Tamils isn't it?). That air of cultural superiority might be irritating, but it is definitely not caste based.

Venketesh, The reason I emailed to this group is because I felt that if we can't discuss this in this group of educated and enlightened souls, then we really have no chance getting rid of "caste" in general. This sort of visceral hatr…

Actually, the place we stay (Yelahanka) are very few tamils. In the apartment complex we stay in, there are maybe 4 tamil families (out of over 350). this is why it was strange. These aren't Bangalore Tamilians, so I am assuming anti-Brahmin fe…

I have read the "Search for the Historical Krishna" and was not terribly impressed. The author gives some evidence from astronomy (using astrological charts mentioned in the VEdas, etc) to set the year as around 3100 BC for Krishna. Also s…

Rants on science and education
I think one has to take the long term view on this. Yes, in the short run IT will earn well. They will start off really well and it is much more of an initial struggle in science to finish a phd, a post doc etc. But with the emphasis being placed on…

Don't get me started on our lack of science. *sigh* We find it so difficult to find motivated scientists. Everyone wants to go the IT route. The thing is, at one level I don't blame them. People go where the money is. However, we are sorel…

Wrt satyagraha, it was an effective tool for the time, place and opposition. I doubt if it would have worked against the nazis or against say the Moghuls. They both would have chopped off his head. You have to give the British credit for their sense…

Thanks SPS, I understand that the "demi-godification" was by Rajendra.. but that was just hyperbole.. just like our present day politicians do (Puratshi deivame etc). Maybe one of us should sit down and write a more down to earth story ;)
