That was true for the entire India then.Entire India was enslaved except Tamilnadu.Given a chance,any state in India then would have gladly accepted a telugu ruler than a sultan.We lost our indigenous emperors but atleast our culture was saved.

Indian kings were a shame to our nation.They sold our country to muslims initially and british finally.But hinduism gave us strength to survive the holocaust.It created saints in droves,the bakthi movement spread during muslim rule only.Finally it was a gujarathi vaishnavite who won us independence by using vedic principles of fasting and satyagraha
There is a story which lead to emergence of Vijaya Nagara samraajyam.
Vidhyaranya, is one of the pontiffs of Sringeri Shaaradha peetam...After sensing a danger from muslims towards south..he was in an urge to do something to put a stop to this...this is one task.
He is a great Shrividhyo upasaka..and was intiated to matra, 'Soubhagya Panchadasi' or 'Soubhagya Panchadhasaakshari'..a 15 sylabbled mantra. He chanted it so many times and Goddess Lalitha Parameshwari appeared in form of Mahalakshmi..and granted him a boon..it seems he asked for lots and lots of money..but godess said..she cannot have it in this birth..So he did what Pious Adhi Shankara did..he immediately for Sanyasa..which means he has taken an other birth. Now, the problem was ..as a sanyasin..he cannot touch the money. So, he wanted to use it in establishing the Empire..He had two people..and made them valiant enough to manage a empiredom after establishing it..
He gave them a 'Adikkal' and requested them to place it at ground..when he blows the counch..He went far to study the stars at a clear sky..and these two people were waiting..suddenly they heared a counch blown.and they kept the 'Adikkal' down..then they also heared another counch blown. Alas..they missed it..the second one was blown by vidhyaranya..when Vidhyaranya came ot know about this..he was upset and pacified himself thiking it is all will of God.
The empire thus estalibshed was Vijayanagara. If they had placed the 'Adikkal' at the correct time..it seems the Muslim rulers, could not have entered south for 2000 years..
Finally, this is a fact and not to hurt any muslim brothers in the forum.
Islam also have wide divisions. Shia and sunny always fight with each other.In Iraq, Pak, it is always a problem. Even in our UP (lucknow areas) every year they fight.
There ia another division, ahmadia muslims. They follow other prophets also.
So, it is not that other religions are of homogeneious group. In Christianity, there are more than 20 divisions. Many fight each other in pulling members from one group in to their group as religious conversion
