It is not often you find miniatures in the upper reaches of a Gopura. So we
    were
pleasantly surprised to find a rare depiction from the Mahabharatha in the
    Tirukkurungudi Temple's Gopura.

  • Hanuman in Arujan's flag.

There is a song in Perundevanar Bharatham. Pandavas on their way to Heaven meet Vanaras and tell them that " Hanuman is our elder brother and he sat in our flag".

Perundevanar is dated to Nandivarma III of Thellar fame.
  • As usual Excellent post by Vijay sir.Does similar panel exist in Angorwat ?or the greater India temples ?

  • Tks Karthik . I have not seen this depicted anywhere else so far ! quite
    unique
  • Arjuna's main enemy was Karna.Karna was a surya putra.Even though the world did not know it,every one knew that his kavacha kundala was bestowed by Suryaand protected by him.
Hanuman had swallowed surya himself. To remind karna of the same , he had put hanuman in his banner.

  • Hanuman Thought that Surya is a fruit. But subsequently, he learnt from surya as a student. Hence it may notbe to remind Karna.

He said that he will roar from the flag and that alone will be enough to instill fear.

Secondly - there is a sub story. ( Dont know whether it is in Mahabharata)

Once the war was over - Krishna asked Arjuna to step down first. Then Hanuman went out from the flag. Then Krishna got down from the chariot.

The Chariot immediately went into flames. All the astras could not do anything as long as Krishna and Hanuman were there. Once they got down, the chariot went inti flames.
  • an interesting question.

Why he should roar from Arjuna's chariot is the question ?
    Why not Bhima's chariot ?
