Rajendra - whether ignored the Thanjai ? .. 002

The ref is from Dr RN's work

    http://tamilartsacademy.com/books/gcpuram/chapter09.html

A careful study of the inscription reveals that most of the lands and
proceeds recorded in this inscriptions are also recorded in the Tanjavur
inscriptions of Rajaraja as gifts to the great temple of Tanjavur. It is
strange that most of the lands gifted to Tanjavur temple by Rajaraja should
have been transferred to the temple of Gangaikondacholapuram by his son
within twenty five years of the original gift.
  • If RJC has such a disregard to RRC and Tanjai, he would not built GKC lesser
height than Tanjai. I think keeping the height of GKC below Tanjai RJC makes
    a point.
  • > in 1012 AD he makes RRC - YUVARAJA from Madhandanayakkan.. !!
    > This is because of the BITTER EXPERIENCE of declaring Adithakarikalan as
Yuvaraja by Sundara in very early stage.

Hmm, Rjc made Rajadhiraja as co regent in 1018 ! and co ruled till 1044 !!

  • Why Sundara Pandya destroy only Tanjore and Uraiyur - and even then manage
to capture both Kulothunga and Rajaraja III from there?

  • Hi Vj

uraiyur must have been a purely symbolic conquest. the cholas had long since stopped ruling from there ever since pallava times.
or uraiyur being in the buffer area between GKC and madurai battles must have been fought there

    venketesh
  • Hi Vijay

what this is Sadayavarman Parantagapandian Mei Keerthi....

kannippor seidu kanthalur salai kalalamaruthu? was there one more kannippor done at kanthalursalai and again kalamaruthu after 1120 AD?

confusing - are we missing out some thing ? now should we revisit the meaning of kalamaruthu?
  • uraiyur was symbolically important as it gave the name of the cholas. kozhi vendan they used to call themselves
  • Dear sir,

Pls have a look of this site. This page analyses a lot about,

  • ""... that the SAME LANDS were removed from Thanjai to GKC

    grants... "

    Dear Vijay,

Will check the inscription and revert with more details.

    thanks for posting.

  • On the same note, can someone come up with a reasonable explanation as to
why - we do not have a single inscription of Rajendra in GKC? While the
entire big temple is covered with those of him and his father - yes we do
have Rjc inscriptions in the big temple - some cases the son inscribing on
behalf of his father - but why he did not leave even one in ` his' temple

i always thought sundarapandya destroyed everybuilding in GKC except the temple.
the temple walls were torn down to build a bridge across kollidam.

    venketesh
  • If I'm not mistaken, the temple walls being torn down to build the bridge
came later - during British rule...

  • > If I'm not mistaken, the temple walls being torn down to build the bridge

ya. they were the exterior walls of the temple compound. mainly because they needed granite and there was no granite around
  • What about the gopuram? I'm sure that the gopuram of the main temple in the
capital city would have been completed; do we have any idea when it was
    demolished?

  • dear sir,

    http://www.varalaaru.com/Default.asp?articleid=124&threadParent=2

pls have look at this page of Varalaaru.com.

the author of this aricle notifies the inscriptions of Rajendraruling
years3,6,10 and 19, available at BIG TEMPLE. The status of the inscriptions, is
notmentioned whetherthey areRoyal orders or not.

i think this shows that Rjcneverignore Thanjai.

when I read the details about Somnath temple of Gujarat, i could notice some
similarities between somnath and Big temple.

At somnath, acharya'swere aboutthousand more in number. the Dancers about
Hundreds.Villagesgranted to thetemple aboutten thousand... around that time
before its destruction By Ghazni, it was a people accumulating place at festive
    occasions, about lakhs in number.

Its comparably same in the deatails of Big temple.

After the destruction of Somnath, there was No,High Standard Temple Comparable
with, Both Somnath and Big temple, until the Somnath re-built.

It could be said that, because of the unavailability of Somnath, the people
ofnorthern zones may look at Big temple for their Pilgrimage or Templel visits.

so that, there is a possiblity of people crowded at Thanjai.

somnath was under the sway of Northern chalukyas, their capital was
anahilwara.they possesed this city, even the Somnath was very prosperous.its
notable, thatthe kings dont want to disturb thevisitors of Somnath.

I would like to say, the same thing was done by Rjc, by moving his Capital to
    GKC.

The royal People's movements, may disturb the peoplewhowere comefor Big
    Temple visit.

I feel, these are considerable with the Capital Shifting to Gkc.

    Thanking you
