Tamil Numerals
  • Dear all

I know there is a Tamil numerical system...but not used at all how old is it....Is it what you find in the kalvettukal or is it the arabic system???

    Sridhar
  • Dear Sridhar,

Yes. The kalvettukal contains tamil numerics only. Ka, U, Su, etc. The
measures and units (like sandhi, kalam, etc) are mentioned in sanskrit
symbols. During the initial period, it will be funny if we try to read a
kalvettu. When we went to visalur with Dr.K, we tried to read one of adhitha
karikalan's inscriptions. In that the recipe of curd rice (thayiramudhu) and
ghee rice (neyyamudhu) were mentioned. It was very interesting and had lot
    of numbers and measures.

  • Dear Krupa,
    Good work, congrats.
However, I am unable to copy this file to my hard disk for
possiblefuture use. Only the arabic numerals are getting copied when
I cut and paste. How do I make a copy of this from your URL.
Kindly advise me. May be direct to my yahoo address as I do not want
the PS site to be cluttered with personal messages.
Also who has the right to delete repeat or unwanted personal
messages. Will that person kindly spend a littl time and delete
    repeats and also personals
  • dear sundaram
