Kadigai by Balakumaran
  • Hi all,

I saw a book release announcement in Tuglaq magazine called 'Kadigai' by
    Balakumaran.

It supposedly deals with how Aditha Karikalan is revenged by some Pandya
citizens for the cruel murder of their king Veerapandya!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone read it? If somebody happens to read it, can they post the gist
    of it here.
  • Dear Dr.Jaybee,

The reason I was eager to know about the book was that, the review
mentions 3-4 other persons (not our Ravidasan & co.) who are members of
a 'kadigai' who take revenge for their king Veerapandya. I don't
remember the names. I will try to post them.

"how Aditha Karikalan is revenged by some Pandya citizens for the cruel
    murder of their king Veerapandya!!!!!!!!!"
This is not my view. This is the rough abstract of what I understood
from the review. I haven't studied history enough to make such
    definitive statements :)

Probably, the author bases his perspective on this:

A 'kadigai' is a college of sorts.

Brahmins were students and teachers in a kadigai.
REvidasan happens to be a Brahmin. He is a 'kiraviththan'.
The Vedas have different methods of reading - paatams.
    Kramam is one them.
A 'Kramavidh' is an exponent of this style of reading.

There are other styles such as 'ganam', 'jata', etc.
A 'ganapaati is someone who excels in 'ganam'.

A 'Kiramaviththan' is someone like a 'ganapaati'.

    :-)

But Kalki and Vikraman consider them to be members of the
    formidable and dangerous 'Thennavan aapathudhavigaL',
the personal body guards of the Pandya king.

There is something that 'udhaikkiRaan' here. Because, when the
AapathudhavigaLs fail in protecting their king, they commit
    suicide.
They might ascend the funeral pyre of the king.....
or just slit their throats by themselves...
    Harakiri.

    Which is what?

    Better make up your minds.
    Before I post my article.

Saththiram, saavadi, college, or martial arts academy.

    By the way.....

Have you heard of the 'Occam's Razor'?

    Regards

    JayBee

    Dr. Jaybee,

Tried to read about it on the net and this is what I found.

For the benefit of others, the following is Occam's Razor
"one should not increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of
    entities required to explain anything"

But don't understand why you are referring to it.

  • Kadigai is not a novel to look forward to. I got it from kamal with
great expectations and was greatly disappointed.

Dr.Jaybee was right in pointing out the thennaven abathudavigal
stuff. There is a very vague mention about a training school for the
abathudhavis in K.A.Neelakanda sastri's Pandiyan Kingdom.
Other than that not much info.

Dr.JB aiya started some very interesting threads in agathiyar on
this - I think he did'nt conclude them nor wrote all he knew. There
he wrote about the 100+ people who participate with a king (pandiya)
in a "virundhu" and who declare that they will live and die with the
king. For this, they enjoyed certain privilages. I think Dr.JB
quoted from an islamic traveller of those times whose travellogues
    have survived..
    Mikka anbudan
    Gokul.S

PS: Sorry if my interactions are limited - due to busy office work I
am not able to participate as much as I want to.

I must say, I was rather disappointed too. G, did you notice
something? In "Udaiyaar", BK had depicted AK's death as done by
spirits and evil forces...but in Kadigai, its back to proper human
    resources.:-)

    Weird.

BTW...anyone know if Udaiyar is going to get completed?
  • > BTW...anyone know if Udaiyar is going to get completed?

He is writing the 3rd volume of Udaiyaar. But i dont know whether that is
the final part or not. It seems he is going to write 5 volumes like PS.

In the chennai book fair, i heard the following comment about Udaiyaar at
    Thirumagal nilaiyam stall.

'Thanjavur kovilaik kattinaare oru raaja. Avaraippatri balakumaran ezhuthi
    irukkaar. Sooooparaana book'
