UZHAVARAPPADAI
  • Hi,

When Appar (also known as Thirunavukkarsar) visited Pazhayarai
(Vadathali - in the 6 - 7 Centuries), that temple was covered by
Jains and Appar had to use local influence to clear the temple for
worship. He also found several other temples covered by trees,
creepers and Putrus.. For this, he used a tool which is similar to
our "Dosai Thiruppi". We have seen SivajiGanesan with this in
Thiruvarutchelvar. This is known as UZHAVARAM. The work force is
UZHAVARAPADAI. Temples which are not frequently visited are
frequently covered by grass etc. Local Youth Missions are
established under the name of UZHAVARAPPADAI to clean the temples.
Of late, this SRAMA DHAN (Donating Physical Labour) has picked up
even in crowded temples. Prior to Vaikunda Ekadasi, recently in
Srirangam Temple, I have seen very rich persons - men and women
(including North Indians) cleaning the oily surfaces of various walls
and pillars around the sanctum. I also took part for a while. We
    were all supplied Uzhavaram!

    Fondly, SB
