Thyagarajan
  • Dear Shri.Narasimhan-

Tyagaraj(an) is a name attributed to Lord Shiva from the familiar story (mythological) of churning of ocean of milk ( Kshir Sagar or Thiru-p-paar kadal )  to acquire elixir of immortality ( amirtham) , by the eternally fighting groups of Asurs and Devas who used Mt. Meru as a churn and venomous snake Vasuki as a chord.

Churning caused many things to come out of the ocean of milk, vedas, mother earth ( Bhoomi) , Godess Laksmi, kamadenu ( the bountiful eternal cow) etc.  Each one of them was gifted out, Vedas went to Brahma, Goddess Lakshmi and Bhoomi were unified with Lord Vishnu. With the churning was on, amirtham no where to be in sight, the tired groups were suddenly confronted by the most toxic of venoms called 'halahal' (Tamil Aalam).  The poison had to be destroyed before it would prove lethal to everything else; obviously there were no takers.

Confronted by the history's first and gravest environmental toxic waste issue the celestial world approached each one of the trinities; all but Lord Shiva refused to help. There was fear that 'halahal' was indestructible, the only way to neutralize it was to swallow the venom.    To save the universe from destruction, the Lord took the high potent venom, demonstrating the greatest of sacrifice that earned him the name 'Tyaga Raj'- the master of ultimate sacrifice.  His consort Parvathi upon seeing what her husband was doing held her husband's neck by her divine hand where the poison stopped creating a blue patch and earning him another name ' Nilakandan' ( Vidam unda Kandan).

Lord Thiyagaraj, as you know, is the principal deity of the world famous shrine at Thiruvayaru, several Chola kings and contributed to this splendor including Karikal, RRC and RC in stages. Even Jatavarma Sundara Padiyan's name is associated with this temple.

You will find this name among Shaivaites. History is replete with great high achieving individuals named after Lord's unique name; notable among them is St. Thiagaraja the classical composer of eternity.

    Shri.Pranadharthiharan ????

Its new to me, the main deity in Thiruvaiyaru is Ayyarappan or
    Panchanatheeshwarar. (meaning is same)

Thiruvarur main deity is Thiyagarajar. Also this is the birth place of
thyagarajar, muthusamy dhikshithar and shyama sasthri.

    Hi Satheesh

tyagarajar is not the main deity at thiruvarur. the thevarams are aimed at shiva in the lingam form
The primary and the most ancient of the shrines at Tiruvarur is that of Vanmikanathar. Vanmikanathar is addressed in the Tevaram hymns of the 7th century CE as Aaruran or Tirumoolattaanamudaiyaar or Putridamkondaar.

Vanmikanathar is represented as a prithvilingam
Tyagaraja or Somaskanda is the deity by whose name, the temple is known. References to Tyagaraja as Veedhi Vitankar are seen in the hymns of Tirunavukkarasar
