• > > The Thirunagari village being nearby to river Uppanaaru

even the main river that touches thillai is uppanaru.

talking about rivers with common names thiru vallam near ranipet -
the home town of vallavarayan vanthiyahevan has a river names "niva"
    also called "poinai"
this river is now being called ponni.

assuming that cauvery( ponni nathi) never touches tanjore town but a
river called ponni runs in thiru vallam who is the ponniyin selvan
that kalki really meant??( with vd out ranking RRc in the number of
    pages of the novel too?

that and this theory are compatible. kalki could have imagined
    himself as vanthiyathevan no?
nandini, kunthavai pungkuzhali and manimekalai flirt with him in the
space of 30 chapters. actually a better role to assume than goody
    goody RRC charecter.

    > but the name ponni is mentioned in thevaram too for kaveri pls see
    the link

never disputed that. but kaveri never touches tanjore town.
muruganandam a son of the soil discovered that error and pointed to
me when he read manuscript of kaviri mainthan.
i had assume it ran within tanjore fort.

Detail of a temple in Thiruparkadal near Ranipet, the river near this temple
is called "PONNI"... maybe VD would have stolen the name from thanjai.
  • Very good one... !

And also consider the fact :

    VALLAM near Thanjai...!
    which existed pre-Vijayalaya too!

In the novel AM was, a number of times will be refered to as "Ponniyin
Selva"(one place I could very well remember was in the 5th book, when
he tries to enter the Thanjai fort, without the knowledge of Chinna
Pahzuvettyar) and a story that oomai Rani saves AM from Ponni river
when he was child clarifies who is ponniyin selvan.
  • Dear Satheesh,

Our dear Muruganandham and Venkat point out that CAUVERY runs at
THIRUVAIYARU (where it split and gave to Sundarar .. etc) and what
runs at Thanjai is a branch.. !

    they are right.

I just touched that it was GREATER THANJAI then ...

    Hi

Can some locals of tanjavur tell us the names of the rivers biscting
    it.
and hoe far is cauvery from the big temple?

satheesh and sivaram, i have very little doubt that kalki's PS is
    about RRC.
its just a co incidence that I pointed out.
i even dount if kalki mentions any details about thiruvallam. may
have mentioned it once in reference to Vd

    fantastic satheesh

    one small doubt.
can you check if the above river is on the route of vanthiyathevan to
    tanjore.
could its name have inspired the stuffed muthalai episode of vanathi?
  • Dear Sir,

you mean his first visit?? If yes there is less possibility he could have
followed this route, because the Muthalai episode happened in arisilaaru if
I am correct? After visiting kudainthai Jodhidar this muthalai episode
happens and VD went to Thanjavur via Thiruvaiyaaru.

But there is a chance for him to touch this river after thiruvaiyaaru near
Thanjai. Anyway I will check the course of the river and let you know.
  • Dear Satheesh,

Vandiyathevan is reaching Veeranam - just crossing present
    SETHIATHOPE. Kadambur - ( Udayarkudi @ Kaatumannarkoil )

established later by Rajendra I, this detail is omitted by Kalki.

He does not touch (present) Vallam .. !

Anyhow you just check and tell.

    anbudan / sps
  • Thank you, Satheesh,
Now I can label the photo I have of the stream
& ghats alongside the Big Temple.

the river may have changed in the book but the episode must have been
triggered off by the name of this river???

    =========================================================

    Dear SPS & Venket sir,

towards kaveri after starting from kadambur. If this is true he could have
    never touched Pazhuvur.

BTW, Here are the details of the Muthalai muthu vaari according to my
    friends in Vallam;
There is no specific origin for this muthalai muthu vaari, it collects the
water from all high points near vallam and joints the river puthu aaru at a
village called kuruvaadipatti. This village is located at around 4 to 5 kms
from vallam. This river is flowing from east to west direction (When you go
to trichy from thanjai it flows from left side to right side).

I will collect more details this weekend.
  • Hi,

I would appreciate a snapshot from google maps or yahoo maps, with the names of the rivers, :) Gives a fantastic perspective to everyone, including dummies like me.
  • HI All
we sure should appreciate satheesh for his geographical knowledge of
    his home town
how many of us from chennai can name the two major rivers here.

satheesh can you also enlighten us on kollidam which once again has
more space devoted for it than kaviri in the novel ponniyin selvan.
  • hi

asi has a board in big temple giving the names of rivers named after
    chola kings

    mudikonda chola pperaru
    tanporuttamana mudikonda cholap peraru
    sunkantavirtta cholap peraru
    akalangap peraru
    madurantaka vadavaru
    veerachola vadavaru
    veera ranjendra chola vadavaru
    vikrama naru
    karikala cholap peraru ( kollidam)
  • we sure should appreciate satheesh for his geographical knowledge of

  • ponniyin selvan ,rajarajan , belongs to not only to tanjavoor but to entire
    cholanadu.
he belongs to entire chola naadu not only to tanjore .
most of the incidents took place inkudanthai and other ponni area.
  • And also i heard one line about kollidam
    காவிரி கரை புரண்டால் கொள்ளும் இடம் கொள்ளிடம் (Kaviri karai purandal kollum idam kollidam).

One doubt: When i came from jayankondam cross road to kumbakonam...there is very big river, i think that one is kollidam.

In my college days i was in srirangam. We were going to college through kollidam bridge. Yappa...its really very long bridge...
