kannadasan
  • in his autobiographical song kopaiyile en kudiyiruppu kannadasan
finally said " padaipathanaal en peyar iraivan"
since i ( too)create, my name is god

in a recent song in a tamil movie the hero asks" brama devanum oru
    kannadaasaO unnai padaitha thanaal"

twenty years after he dropped the pen kannadasan is so fondly
    remembered .

  • Another reason, he wrote auto-biography about him and wrote lot of
sensitive/personal/political information about him as well as others.
Remember, when Anna presented ring to Karunanithi and what Anna
replied when Kannadasan asked why he didn't get one?
  • Koppaiyele en kudiyiruppu was based on persian poet Omar Khayyam's
life and work and the famous quote that poets are Gods are also
attributed to him originally. Kaviarasar deserves credit for making
it popular in tamil of course, not to mention he was another Omar
Khayyam himself in many ways :)

Yes as SPS said KD was a genius in timing, correlating songs with
    hidden messages...few I know of -

Nalandaana - for Anna returning from illness
Sivagaami maginadum - Forget he movie, some MGR movie with Saroja
Devi playing Narasimha and Sivakami (i don't want to say anything
more :)) but the song intended for Kamarajar when KD wanted to
    support him
Poiyyile pirandhu - love song for Devika, who was his fan initially
    and girl friend later..
Neeyum naanuma - nephew Panju Arunachalam (I think) who was a
    budding movie poet

Any more would be interesting :))
  • annan ennada thambi ennada for 'als' his brother who refused to lend
    some money
  • -Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,
A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse -- and Thou
Beside me singing in the Wilderness --
    And Wilderness is Paradise enow.

this poem of khayam is perhaps what you mean

  • Venkat, yes. I will try to find the other quote also,
i had a book somewhere and had underlined it.
  • Sorry my sister corrected - the MGR duet was not
'sivagami maganidamum' it was 'pon ezhil poothadhu'.
  • >in his autobiographical song kopaiyile en kudiyiruppu
    kannadasan

    >venketesh.

In general " kopaiyile en kudiyiruppu, kolamayil en
thuNaiyiruppu" means he is always with liquor and a
lady. His critics used to say so.

But the other section of his fans gave a different
    meaning for the same.

Kopaiyile en kudiyiruppu means " an ink bottle is
always with him" & kolamayil en thuNaiyiruppu means
"mayiliRagu which is used to write poetry using ink is
    his companion".
  • 'pon ezhil poothadhu'.

    is from kalangarai vilakku

saroja thevi in 2 roles. one is who goes mad just after she read
sivakamiyin sabatham and imagines she is sivakami.
finally she jumps off from the light house and dies.

appa! you should see thalaivar as maamallan. super.

    beautiful!
but that doesnt mean the widely accepted interpretation is false.
both are equally apt for that genius

  • Wow..Venkat that is good gto know, I know thalaivar
had a real crush on SS as a story and wanted to make
it some day, he only got a chance to use it like this.

I don't think too highly of his looks or acting
skills, but I know he respected the epic much.
  • Beautiful pun :)

  • MGR dotting Narasimha pallava was to a large extent tolerable (many
who read kalki would have visualized N.Pallava as a 6 ft breat build
wrestler). What was difficult - saroja devi as sivakami... the
abinayams were found wanting, i would have preferred a padmini in the
    role.

  • Yes, Mamallan was a broad shouldered musclemann Mgr maintained good figure but was hardly a muscle man. Yes of course BS could not dance like padmini or vyjayanthi. It is interesting, NTR was famous for playing Krishnadevaraya, but real KDR was short pockmarked guy quite unlike NTR. The nice thing abt this song is BS makeup exactly like Maniam drew Sivagaami. The song is Panju Arunachalam, not KD. Very nice romantic lyrics.

  • One more that I know of is about the 'Marudhamalai
maamaniye', KD was out of money to conduct his
daughter's marriage when he was penning lyrics of
Deivam produced by great Muruga Bhakta Chinnappa
Devar. He wrote the line 'Devarin kulam kakkum
velayya, ayya', in his mind he had devas, not
chinnappa devar but chinnappa devar was listening to
the rehearsal in next room and was so impressed that
he came out and gave KD a cheque for 1 lakh for his
daughter's wedding!! Velayya was writing through KD's
    pen that day.:))

All KD Fans, if you have missed Mahendra Raj's blog,
here is the link. Mahendra Raj is an authority on
movies especially the 50s-60s-70s era. Suggestion
before you read this. This is a real long link full of
anecdotes and will keep you online a while. When I
read it first i was so absorbed and forgot completely
all my chores, even that I had to pick up a friend
from airport. He arrived by himself, in taxi, i was
still reading. Not happy he was. Enjoy :))

  • Dear Dr Sri, you are most welcome. :))
  • KD must be in par with the great legends of our time, a highly
evolved spiritual person as every one knows.
Of all his songs, the most catchiest with the greatest subtle
spiritual tone would be 'Kodi asainthathum kaatru vanthatha'. Listen
to it a few times and it will question the very basics of Maya.
What and how did things happen and what do we feel true is it true :-)
A detailed commentary of Sankaracharya's bagavad geetam
    words 'Dhukrinj kharane'.
It takes a genius to put things in this prespective. KD was one.
  • Yes. In my opinion, the song "Ullathil Nalla Ullam..." in movie Karnan
is one of his best. In a single song, he gives the essence of Bhagavat
Gita and you also recently linked the youtube video

    http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=QO8qHWk0cdo
  • Sorry the other one Maranathai Yenni Kalangidum Vijaya

    http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=h-MoMP1pmS0
  • True, of all his songs, which mesmerize people this (kodi
asainthathum) was the song that talks about 'Deja vu' and questions
the very concept of what we percieve as truth and what is truth in
essence. That is why this lands up as my first song. Only those who
want to hear it in the fomat prescribed will enjoy the embedded
    meaning.
Compare with Baarathi's "Nirpathuve nadapathuve parapathuve song and
    the flow unwinds.
    Another gem:
Ezu swarangalukkul ethanai ragam, explains in purest form without
mentioning the word Karma - what it is. That logic of what is Karma
and how that prevails wether we want it or not.
    Lines below:
    Enakkaga nee azhalaam iyarkkayil nadakkum
Nee enakkaga unavu unna eppadi nadakkum?
    Namakkendru bhoomiyile kadamaigal undu-
adhai namakkaaga nam kaiyaal seivathu nandru

    Kadamai,here, is equated as Karma.
  • To my mind he captured the Gita essence in 'aatuvithal yaar
oruvar...' - as it applies to the common man, so very eloquently.
    Golden lines -

'Ullathille ulladhu dhaan ulagam kanna, adhai unarndhu kondal
    thunbam ellaam vilagum kanna...'
