Selfish Vijayalaya Cholar - Chapter 19 Pudhu Vellam.
  • Sometime back, before reading PS, I wrote all Kings - cheras, Cholas,
Pandiyas or everyone else for that sake, are OPPORTUNISTS.

But the general view of the group was - Cholas were better...

    =====================

NOW, I AM READING PONNIYIN SELVAN.

Just in the beginning chapters. In the First Part - Pudhu Vellam - in
    chapter 19,
    http://www.chennainetwork.com/kalki/ps/ps1-19.html

There are couple of songs praising Vijayalaya Cholar. Then in the
second paragraph, it says something like:

'This King was very clever. He fought in the wars that happened in
Chola Kingdom. and he took DIFFERENT SIDES at Different Times.
depending on what is better for him and his country.'

Now, THIS is what I call Opportunism.

    ==============================================

If you say there is nothing wrong with it, then you are approving
everything. Even the bitter battles and Opportunistic Politicians in
    Tamil Nadu.

    Do you?

    Thanks for reading.

    Bye

  • Every Good King is selfish.

They want to protect thier peple and kingdom. Abaya Kulothunga Cholan, Did, remove 'Sungam', but he did only for Native Chola, kingdom, though, almost the entire Dravida naadu, were under cholas.

Weaker side joining the stronger side for the war was not common. Even, Pandyas did that, when Amarabhuyangan joined hands with, then Chera King, Baskararavivarman, to fight Great Rajaraja. When Pandya ( I forgot the name ) went with Vikrama Chola to fight Kalingas. When Pallavas, togther with Manavarman, fought with Chalukyas. If, Vijayanagara Samraajya, was noticed, Raamaraayar did this, but it proved fatal for himself and the entire dynasty.

This is 'Rajathanthiram'. Vijayachala Cholan, did this and what did we see? The powerful Cholas rule, which was praised as a 'Golden Era' for Tamils. Great Old Vijayalaya was oppurtunist, but his oppurtunitism, paved a way for Strongest of Tamil Kingdom.

Not to speak about recent politics.

When you or me or anyone become a king, we will be 'Rajathandhiri'. We have to be...

    Rajendhra Cholan!
  • Political allies always opportunitic and Vijayalaya
    Chola not exceptional.

Even in 2nd world war US took non-interfere with
Germans when their blood brother UK fought with
Germans. Japanese blown Pearl Harbour made US to
realise the war. They swiftly changed political allies
(!? US and USSR on same block) and ended war.

So Vijayalaya Chola did his best which paved
opportunity to Tamil become mighty empire spread
    across south asia.

Subbu will enjoy after he read couple of volumes in PS
and will not have doubt on Cholas. He will later
praise the kings and emperors who ruled our people
    gloriously.

Yes the kings were oppertunistic. They took different
sides depending what was good for their country. They
never amassed wealth for their family, there was no
Nepotism, the kings did eveyrthing good for the
    country.

Even the marriages were oppertunistic, again the main
aim was the welfare of the country and the people not
    any individual.

I feel one should not compare this situation with the
    present day politicians of TN.

Howdy, Stranger!
