maratha king pratap singh image
  • friends,
yesterday i went to vaitheeswaran koil. i found raja prathap singh( 1750)image near the southern wall of the temple on a pillar close to the pond. there is also an inscription stating that. opposite to him there appears another king( marathi style dress) but the insciption is too undecipherable.

pratap singh was the last maratha autonomous ruler after whom the power in reality shifted to the british. he is well known for his resistance to islamic forces from arcot. he is known to have killed chanda sahib of arcot. his palace in thiruvidaimarudhoor is still present ( in dilapidated state).

anglo-french rivalry in tamilagam culminated in wandiwash battle in which prathap singh supported british.
