    Your are correct. Historically Rama Katha, precedes Mahabharatha.

    You find briefly the Rama Katha & Nala Katha in the original Mahabharatha itself by Saint Viyasa. Refer Ganguly's English translation of the original Sanskrit Mahabharatha by Viyasa.
