Ponniyin Selvan - Sembiyan Ma Devi
  • from what I had read.......

Gandaraditya's queen Sembiyan Madeviyar who bore him a son Madhurantaka Uttama Chola. Grandaradiya ruled only for a very short time (CE 950-957), Uttama Chola must have been a young boy, as he was set aside in the order of succession and Arinjaya and Sundara chola took over the Chola crown for some time. Sembiyan Madeviyar survived her husband for a long time. She died c. 1001 C.E. during Rajaraja’s reign.
She seems to have been a pious lady as she figures in several inscriptions, making donations to various temples. She is said to have come from the Chera desa. Hence her birthplace could not be in the Chola desa.
She has made some of the most lavish endowments of the Chola Empire and has built numerous temples some of which are at Kutralam, Virudhachalam, Aduthurai, Vakkarai, Anangur, etc.
Her signal contribution was in the field Bronzes which are closely dated which reveal that she patronized a particular family of artists who executed all her works so much so they bear close resemblance to each other, inspite of them being in different locations. They have a delicate body, sharp features, gracefully treated garments and Jewellery and features. The Konerirjapuram Temple at Thanjavur contains several bronzes of this Sembiyam Mahadevi School. Beautiful Bronze of Natarajar, Kalyanasundarar are popular images of this Phase.
