In the series of sites related to the Mattamayura tradition in north India, Surwaya presents a very interesting perspective on the cultural and social perspective of these monasteries. In contemporary times we have seen growth of various different sects, and their directions going on wrong path resulting in disturbing series of events. Probably the same might have happened in medieval times, as suggested by a scholar.
Surwaya has a monastery with three temples all enclosed within a fortress. However this fortification was carried out later in about 12th-13th century CE.
