"Kaanthal" denotes a flower name in Tamil. A region/road (saalai) full of Kaanthal gardens
(Poovanam) might have been invaded by RRC and during the course, killed Ravidasan Panchavan Brahmadhirajan (he could be a brahmin too ! ) who might have been hiding in the poovanam
and the brahmin priests who protected him could have also been killed by RRC. According to Vedas
to kill a brahmin is "brahmahathi dosham"and RRC being a follower of scriptures,
could have felt bad for his deeds and refused the throne and took salvation in Big Temple !
Maybe that was the reason he relinquished the office in favour of Madurantaka Devar
and concentrated on construction of temples as a salvation !
Just a small suggestion; can we please stop trying to find different ways to connect a non-existent brahmahati dosham to RRC or the Big Temple? Thanks!
Every king of the Chola dynasty from Vijayalaya (Narthamalai) to at least Kulothunga III (Kampahareswara at Tribhuvanam) built temples; some of them, like RRC, RJC and others built monumental ones. No Brahma hathi dosham needs to be invoked to explain why Rajarajeswaram was built. Let's get that one clear.
Besides, Kanthalur Salai happened _after_ Madhurantaka's reign. RRC was definitely young. That was definitely not the reason he relinquished the throne.
The question of salvation however still remains. I think pretty much every temple ever built by every monarch is in some way linked to their desire for salvation.

In the time of bhojaraja , the king of malwa, he found an educational institution by his name as " bhoja - sala " . In this the word " sala" and the " Salai " in Tamil are same. That Is the kandhalur Salai is also an educational institution.
As I remember that a chalukya king also established an educational institution resembling the kandhalur Salai and by an Ay king also.
As it was noticed by all the epics that the Kshatriyas must learn the 64 arts.
In the southern India of that time this kandhalur salai only, must had the supremacy among the others, like the nalanda in northern india, even there are some other minor institutions also.
As it is mentioned first in RRC's meikeerthi, it is the first pride of Rrc (I.e) he got the graduation by kalam maruththaruli, this may be an final examining method to give the graduation.
That's why the pandyas also records the same, that is, they are also highly graduated.

KINDLY PERMIT ME TO REMIND OURSELVES that the VISIBILITY of our mails is much more and when one puts Adithakarikalan murder / RRC Pallippadai and search in the web, MOST of our mails only surace..
According to the statement : he relinquished the office in favour of Madurantaka Devar - precedes RRC coming to power in 985 CE..
Brahmahathi .. has not taken place in that period atleast according to assumptions ..
Sembianmadevi also constructed several Temples in the same period !!??
There is no such Brahmahathi thing involved whatsoever.
these speculative details would get into the web and will provide leads to TWIST to History..
It is not new for kings to construct new temples as well as renovating old temples. Pallavas - Many new temples Like Kailasanatha, Vaikundap perumal in Kanchi and as well as in many towns like Villupuram, Pullalur, Uthiramerur etc Also like Tiruthani, maangadu the list is many - Many Parameswara mangalams, Mahendramangalam, Aavani narayana mangalams. Early Pandyas also constructed many new stone temples like - Srivilliputhur Vaidyanatha swamy ( referred as katrali Mahadevar), Thenthiruppoovanam, Then hirumaliruncholai ( at Seevalapperi), Kanyakumari Bhagawathy ( kanyappidariyar) , Aathoor etc. A very big vishnu temple built by Pandyas near Perur is lost in time. Before RRC - Aditya,Parantaga, Sundara, Uthama built many new temples like Veera Chozha Vinnagaram ( later became thirubhuvanai), Thirumalpuram, Gopurappatti to name a few. Kings Building a new temple is not a New Phenominanan and Grand temples like Kailsanatha, Vaikundap perumal temples did exist. RRC made much bigger one and that is the only difference. Hence- let Brammahathi stay at Thiruvidaimarudhur gate and rest peacefully
