Ramayanam before Kamban 76 - Mannar Koil
  • Mannar Koil - Near Ambasamudram - Tirunelveli
    district

Mannar koil is Mannanar Koil - Mannanar is Raja - Rajagopala

This temple to Rajagopala was built by CheraKing Rajasimha with the permission of Rajendera Chola.

This place is the "Thiru arasu" of Kulasekara Azhwar. ThiruArasu is the last resting place. This place is on the Tirunelveli - Tenkasi - Kollam Road.

Interestingly Pandya country has many thiruarasus of Alwars. Periyalwar at Alagarkoil, Thirumangai Alwar at Thirukkurungudi, Nammalwar who stayed at the "Puliyamaram" of Azhwar Thirunagari for his entire life and this one of Sri Kulasekara Alwar.

    refer the following inscription;

112 of 1905. (Tamil.) On the same wall. A record in

the twenty-fourth year of the Chola king Parakesarivarman alias

    Udaiyar Rajendra-Choladeva (I, 1012 -43). Records gift of land.

Says that the shrine was called Rajendracholavinnagar after

the reigning king and that it was built by the Chera king Raja-

simha. The latter may be the king referred to in 710 of 1905 at

Palni in Madura district (Md. 281.)

1.This temple has some miniatures of Ramayana.

    2. Both the Vimana and Goshtam has Dakshinamoorthi

    3. An interesting panel of Kulasekara Alwar

    4. A dancing ganesa

    5. Vali worshiping Lingam

The sad part is this temple was sand blasted and lost all its murals. The miniatures have worn out after the sand blast.
