direction sensing machine
  • Hello;
    Was watching a program on History Channel regarding a CHinese direction
    sensing machine. Its design was brilliantly simple. Its a bullock cart sized
    machine with bevel gears and a pointer to show the direction.
    Here whenever the user embarks on a long journey he sets the pointer to
    point towards his hometown(starting point).
    Now, after this, which ever way he turns the pointer points towards his
    hometown hence showing him the way back or the way forward.

    Did Indian travellers use such equipment or were we so good in reading the
    sun and stars that we dint need such mahcines.?
    There had to have been some method of Direction Sensing as otherwise people
    tend to walk in circles.

    Has anybody heard about this?
  • HI Rahul

    whereas the original indian vastu sastra was based on the sun and its
    movement, chinese feng shui was based on a magnet based compass
    loupan.
    but of recent its beleived the south americans may have used
    magenetic compasses earlier.

  • Hi Mr.Venketesh;
    Ive always belived that the CHinese civilisation based most of its early
    stage studies on Technology like magnets, etc.
    We on the other hand based our studies on astronomy.
    They have a number of inventions to thier name but we dont inspite of the
    fact that we would also have faced the same challenges and would surely have
    come up with solutions. Astronomy is something, i feel, which have used
    extensively for even the most basic of challenges.
    Is it that or like some many other instances we were just incredibly lazy to
    record our activites.
    This is another case where these two civilisations have taken completely
    different paths when faced with similar challenges.

    the chinese were incredibly curious people. a lot of their philosophy
    is based on asking questions.
    the fertile field for innovation is an area where questions are asked.
