sivakamiyin sabatham/ pandiyan's rathanaharam
  • For sure SS has a very clear story line and well defined characters..
when i started reading SS, i was in Chennai and use to visit mahabalipuram often..
no wonder it would transfer you to the same time, and make you believe vats happening is right before you.

Jus for a change in the topic..
Who got Pandiyan's rathnaharam and mani makudam back ?
..does the same has any historical significance or jus a dream stroke by the writers as who got the same back...
recently going through a discussion on another group as VT was not able to find the same,
then who really got the same.. or did they???

    hi,

it was not rathina haram - it was called indira haram. you can search
our archives for lots of info on this - as per rajendra's prasithi -
retrived from lanka along with the crown jewels of the srilankan king.
  • dear member
Pandian indra haram and manimakudam and senkool all may be the imagination of the writers including kalkai. I also wrote one short story namely "Kadal kalvettu" based on the above imagination mixing computer and Pandian history and the story is published in Kalaimagal Deepavali Malar 2000 I request the members may read and enjoy the story. If any body is unable to get the story kindly inform me i will give the same
  • Dear kailasam, i would very much like to read, if it
is available online, could you please forward,
  • Thanks Vijay.

    nice one, sps
  • Vijay,

If that was the history about Pandiyan's rathnaharam, I read
in "Kaviri Mainthan" that it was found during the time of Utthama
Chozha. Though the narration that Kandamaran found it could a piece
of imagination , atleast I thought the time could be correct.

    Please clarify.
  • Vijay,

That is a great account. Waiting to hear from you more.

    =====Quote====
There is no mention of it being found in uttama times ( dont
remember venkat mentioning so in KM).
    ====Unquote===

Oh no! Even I am not saying that Venketesh, verbally said so.
According to Kaviri Mainthan, the finding of the haram and
    maNimakudam
by KandamaRan, along with Loka, happens while Utthama Choza was
ruling. That is why I said so.

    Venketesh,

I am not arguing here. But I would be definitely interested on your
comments as to how you chose to protray KandamaRan to have found it.

HI venkatesh, that is artistic /poetic license....anyway if you want
    to argue - read below inscription...the Loka's mother's name...

    epigrahica indica vol VII

(Line 1.} Hail ! Prosperity ! In the ninth year of king
Rajarajakesarivarman, Kundanan Amritavalli, who gave birth to our
lady Lokamahadeviyar, gave to the god of the tiruvirattnam (temple]
at Tirukkovalur in Kurukkai-kurram, (a subdivision) of Miladu, one
perpetual lamp(which shall burn before the god as long as the moon
    and the sun shall last.
  • Hi Vijay
the entire kaviri maindhan takes place during uthama's period.

half way thro the research for the novel i was convinced by quite a
few factors mainly the pandya version that the cholas never laid
their hands on it or something to that sort.
there also existed a possibility that there could have been more than
    one set.
the rest was as you say the imaginative licence.
of course i have a chapter when every one feels te pandya jewels
after being found are quite unlucky and the PM wants it inside a box
for some future king to use when needed.something like the l;ast
scene in raiders of the lost ark.
if you notice well enough loka- the name was actually chosen because
it sounded better. actually rajendran's favourite step mother was
panchavan madevi. ( another recent book as mentioned her as a temple
dancer and I did not want to evoke those memories in the reader)
so you may consider her a part of fiction too.

    hi venkat

whatever your reason, we would always argue - but then indirectly you
are meaning that RJC's claim to fame was actually a sham - his
prasithi is boasting!. when we do have such cases of contradicting
info - for eg of even RRC conquest of rattapadi - from inscriptions of
the other side - similar pulikesi's inscriptions on the conqest of
kanchi (SS) ....but in that case are your doubting RJC's ganges
campaign ( maybe he just went on a teertha yarta), his overseas
maritime exploits....only proof again for this is his prasithi. but
now even experts this side are agreeing that this was a fact.

you say versions from the pandya side... lets see what you have. such
a jewel of such immense respect and awe - when for eg sundara pandya
when he wrecks havoc on uraiyur and tanjore - the now famous ploughing
with donkey etc - if he had retrived the haram, he must have put it as
a crowning accomplishment - but cant find...
  • Dear vijay
Thank you very much about the detailed history of the indra haram and mani makudam.
It is true that every kingdom has such property. Pandyain kingdom was no exception. I agreed that pandiyan kingdom was also having such royal property.
I am just telling the various interesting stories about indraharam manimakudam or senkol. These stories are much interesting and many may not exactly equivalent to the history. For example what is the evidence that only indran has given the malai to pandyas?.
However these stories about indra haram mani makudam or senkol are much interesting and liked by many readers including me.
I will enclose my story for members in next mail
    thank you
    yours faithfully,
    lkailasam
  • dear sps,

Incidentally is RJC's prasithi the last time we hear of the haram?.
for eg when RJC crowned his son as viceroy starting the chola
pandya - is there any reference to him using the indira haram and
sundara mudi to crown him so to gain credence?? ( i think vengaiyin
mainthan takes this line of thought) but wanted to check with you

EI - vol 14 deals with chola pandya viceroys, but cant find any
reference to the actual crowning there.

while searching came up with - one more wife of RJC - Ulagudaiyar
and hence could she be the mother of Jatavarman Sundara-Cholapandya
whose son vikrama chola pandya is being referred here.

    No. 182.

    (A. R. No. 623 of 1916.)

    Sermadevi, Ambasamudram Taluk, Tirunelveli District.

On the south wall of the central shrine, Ammainatha temple.

This epigraph, which is fragmentary apparently, belongs to the time
of Maravarman Vikrama-Cholapandya. It mentions the gift of fifty
cows made by Ulagudaiyar queen of the Chola king, who took Gangai,
Kidaram and Purvadesam, i.e., Rajendra-Chola I, whose name is lost
in this inscription, for maintaining two lamps in the temple of
    Kailasamudaiya-Mahadeva. Maravarman Vikrama-Cholapandya must have
succeeded Jatavarman Sundara-Cholapandya. The queen Ulagudaiyar,
wife of Rajendra-Chola, must have continued to live then. It is not
clear if Rajendra-Chola was dead at the time ; possibly he was.
  • Very informative detail.

    thanks Vijay.,
