A proposal for consideration: PS Varalatru peravai
  • Dear members

Just wanted to share some thoughts on a proposal which can possibly be
executed under the banner of PS Varalatru peravai. Pl see if this is
workable and if not we will drop it.

The idea is to host a simple monthly lecture from a scholar for an
hour in some place which we deem fit. We will then record this lecture
and publish it, with the permission of the scholar.

Of course what we are going to gain out of that 1 hour is one thing,
but having an activity every month - bringing our like minded friends
etc are the major benefits which I see.

Initially we can start with chennai and slowly spread out to other
areas/countries. One of us can take responsibility for one month and so on

It should not become an economic burden for anybody so we can start
things very simple and see how it evolves. Some media publicity might
    help.

Over a period, we can even make this an online event where at a given
time people can dial into a number and the powerpoint can be presented
as a webex (audio/video) session over internet.

Already Roja Muthaiya Library is hosting such an event in their venue
    every month. FYI

    Pl share your thoughts.
  • Hello Gokul,

Really it is a very good idea and should be followed up immediately.

  • If possible and with author's permission, we can digitise the books
and put it online which help members who don't have acess to books.
This doesn't mean that we can just give the book as pdf, we can host
it like I did for Ponniyin Selvan novel here
http://issuu.com/humble/docs or make it pay and get. This would allow
members to have access to all the reference materials in hand, easy to
    search and provide citation.
  • Dear all

Shall we freeze on the name of the scholar for April 2008? Or shall we
    begin in May?

Then we can look at the following details...
    -Date
    -Venue
  • A very good idea. Would be worth if we can implement this.

A thought on this - I know how difficult it is to work out the
logistics, bringing the scholar to a common place, arranging a hall or
a meeting place, consolidating members who are going to attend,
providing logistics for people from other places other than the venue
of the meeting, members travelling the venue etc..

It would be really nice if we can make this happen, but to begin with,
can we atleast try to use the technology? say a net meeting or webex
or using a teleconferencing? People from different part of the world
also can join. I heard www.sabsebolo.com allows upto 10 people to
conference for free. People in the same city can conference each other
using the mobile, thus incurring only local call charges. If we can
work out how people from other countries can join, it would be great
(I think this site is within india, have to check out).

If we can use a webex or similar technology, we can even see the
    presentations online.

I would also suggest, we can try this out amoungst ourselves, before
inviting any scholars. I would say we have enough scholars in this
group itself, to begin with. Gokul, SPS, Venkat, Kalinga Balu, Vijay,
(and many others. omissions not intentional). each can share their
ideas on a topic and we can have a discussion.

If this works out, then we can plan for inviting scholars from outside
    the group.

Please comment. I wish this becomes a reality. We have been talking of
many things in the past, but unfortunately could not proceed due to
different reasons. THis seems to be practical, we can save travel time
and only time is on the meeting.

Suggestions to make this better would be appreciated.
  • Dear Satish,

I think I missed to link some earlier mail. will do.

We are students .. learning. Scholars are defintely the
acknowledged ones. We all hold them at very high respect.

But definitely we can share our views.

Whatever we have been dreaming of in he past will get shaped Satish
    over a period of time..

We are having the enthusiastic members to handle things.

  • Golden words. I agree.

Very Nice SPS. We all will be blessed to have him as our first speaker.

What is your opinion on teleconference rather than a physical meet? Do
you think it will be easy to organize ? If we all agree that
teleconference is the best way to move forward, then we can look at
    the possibilities of implementation.
  • Thats precisely my point. Physical meeting will be possible for people
in the same location. If we can use teleconferencing, all can join.
Thats why I said, we can do a trial run with our own members, who have
better knowledge than others, so that people like me can start
learning and once we are comfortable with the infrastructure we can
start calling scholars from outside the group for talks.
  • Hi Sathish
we shall have 2 different events preferably on the same day. first
time both co inciding may not work out.
members will meet for the morning seesion. a teleconferencing with
out station members can be had.
in the evening session (after the lunch- which unfortunately cannot
be tele- served) we will have lecture session

sps what about the ( erstwhile) tamil new year
namakku chithirai thaan kanakku! athai otti aarambikkalaamaa?

    whole day meet
brunch meeting of members- tele conferencing
    evening session lecture and discussion
    dinner

  • If we can recod these teleconferencing and host it it would help those
who couldn't join or if we need to revisit the topics discussed.

Based on the logistics, I guess it can be done.
  • There are few sites such as gotomeeting or webex that can help on
    free conferences.
  • Dear Vijay,

This should not become like another Bharatha Ratna Award ..

In most of the Book releases, including TKV's Tholthamizhagam, Dr.
Kkvn's books, Airavatham's Tamil Brahmi, we handed over a boquet on
behalf of PS Group : Varatru Peravai and conveyed our best regards.

Vaiko, Hon'ble Minister Thangam Thennrasu, Kanimozhiar and such
popular personalities are aware of our Peravai.

We will revive this and interact with Scholars.

We will work out detailed Agenda and revert to the Group.
