Thiruvaarur: Lord shiva in human form
  • > visitor this was my first time. Can you please tell me why the Lord is
    > worshipped in human form here unlike other places where he's in Lingam
    form?

I think it is a complicated question Rahul. In Thiruveezhi mizhalai
you can see shiva and parvathi in major human forms behind the linga.

In Kanchi ekambaranatha shrine you see parvathi hugging linga in the
front (Thazhuvak kuzhaidhavar) while the human forms are behind the linga

Thiruchathimutram has a chola creation of thazhuvak kuzhaidavar - a
    master piece

IN pallava times, there was a culture of representing the human form
in the back and keeping linga in the front.

I will interpret it this way: The shiva and sakthi cosmic forces are
shown as they exist independently in the background while the linga
represents the creative power of the union. Ofcourse, if you start
asking me "then what does muruga represent?" - I do not know. It is
just a postulate that needs to be analyzed further

But I can tell you that the representation of human forms stops fully
    in chola period.

Thiruvaarur is a mystical temple. I would suggest you "Thiruvaarur" by
    Dr Kudavoil.

This book was written long back and was waiting to be published but
did not get a suitable publisher. That seems to have been the god's
will. For 10 years it remained silent.

Then the occasion came. Thiruvaarur kumbabishekam was conducted in a
grand manner and minister RMV wanted to bring out a good book on the
temple. Found this book. The book was released in front of roughly
hundred thousand who had come to witness the kumbabishekam

Many who came to the function remarked: Thiruvaarur koyilukku
kumbabishekam mattumalla - solabishekamum nadantheri ullathu.

That was the will of the lord of thiruvaarur. The lord who inspired
Saint sundara to sing "Thiruthondar thogai"
