Thanks to the article whether intentional or unintentional the following thought sprang up on my mind.
How big was Toddy business(including opium ganga) in monetary terms during British Raj?
Was Toddy used as a weapon to subjugate the people like in the case of China's opium war.
Was Toddy business considered a treasonable activity by the locals(it was considered unclean earlier) during the British period who were bend on subjugating Hindus?
What was the tool used by the freedom fighters to stop toddy business. Was violent methods used to stop Toddy smuggling(Bootleg) on the Highways by the locals?
When and how did it(drinking) become a high class activity in modern educated India?
Has any research been done on it till 1947. Have any stories been passed on by people living in that period.
Everybody knows that Nadar are associated with Toddy. So please concentrate on facts.

hi venkat
your hero of tillaiyil oru kollaikaran is an expert at downing oru marathu kallu ( special brew - all collected from one tree) - maybe you can explain...lol

kallu kadai mariyal as kalki puts it.
toddy was the sole business for many people and could not be totally eradicated also. kalki ran a magazine vimochanam from thiruchengodu on prohibition.
some 64 pages or so only on this topic. when rajaji mooted the idea kalki was surprised. he said "drunkards are not going to read 64 pages and the those who dont drink have no need for this magazine. how will it sell?"
the magazine wound up after 8 or nine issues when rajaji turned his concentration on to salt sathyagraha.
