    Dear Sir

Sub: Two Day Brain Storming Session on ¡§REVIVAL OF INDIAN
    LAKES¡¨
(RELAKES)- During 29-30 November 2007- Reg.

    Greetings

The lakes and water bodies have always remained as important
resources for MAN and to his lively hood. These vital resources have
started facing degradation and disappearance either due to the
natural processes of the planet Earth or due to
triggering/modification of these natural processes by the
anthropogenic activities or due to the exclusive anthropogenic
    phenomena.

To cite a few, while some of the coastal lakes have degraded and
became even totally defunct due to the morpho tectonic /morpho
dynamic processes of the Earth, most of the mountainous lakes stand
prone for siltation due to deforestation and the induced soil
    erosion.

Whereas the urban lakes are mostly used as sinks for pollution and,
the rural ponds and village ponds are invariably orphans and stand
exposed as obvious dump yards, all resulting into the decline in
    their potentials.

The temple tanks too which enjoyed protection from the humans
because of attracted religious sanctity have disappeared in course
    of time.

Hence, following the clarion call of Dr.A.B.J.Abdul Kalam, the
Former President of India, the programme of evaluating the status of
these lakes has been envisioned by Department of Science and
Technology under the programme of ¡§Revival of Indian Lakes¡¨ for
    their possible revival.

In this connection, a two day Brain Storming Session is
planned at Centre for Remote Sensing, Bharathidasan University,
    Tiruchirappalli during 29-30th November 2007 to invite/gather
eminent scholars working on the lakes of divergent geological /
geomorphological / physiographic provinces of India, to deliberate,
discuss and brainstorm various issues related to their status and to
carve out strategies for their revival.

The topics of deliberations would revolve around,

„S Lacustrine geomorphology and dynamics, sedimentology, bio-
    geochemistry
and ecosystems of mountain/glacial, plain & riverine,
    coastal, desertic,
urban & rural lakes, village ponds, temple tanks etc.,

„S History of lakes, time series modifications of lakes, lakes
    as indicators of
palaeo hydrology, palaeo climatology and pollution.

„S Emerging technologies on lake system studies.

In this connection, I deem it as a great pleasure in
requesting you to kindly contribute an article on the following
topic or related to it or in any one of the topics and participate
in the above Brain Storming Session. As it is also proposed to bring
out the articles to be presented as a special volume in a text book
standard by a leading publisher prior to the event, it is requested
to kindly send your article in a soft copy (10 - 20 pages including
    line drawings and photographs).
