Ranjankudi Fort
  • Ranjankudi Fort : Ranjankudi Fort is located 17 K.Ms. North of
    Perambalur,8 km from Tholudur.

The Fort was built by a Jagirdar under Nawab of Carnatic in 17th
century A.D. The Fort walls are built with neatly cut stone blocks.
There are three fortification walls at different heights and the
bottom most is the main rampart.
It is oblong on plan with semi circular bastions and encircled by a
moat fed by a tank on the Southern side.
The fort contains a palace, residential buildings, underground
chambers, mosque and flag mast. The fort was the scene of the battle
of Valikondah between the English and Mohammad Ali on one side and
Chanda Sahib and the French on the other side in 1751 AD.
This fort is under protection of the Archaeological survey of India.

But with poor maintainance from ASI.
Even villagers dosn't know much about the history of that port.
can any one from our group can give details.
    We got facinated experience there.

  • To this list add

    1. Dindigul Malakottai also known as Umaithurai Kottai ... Legend says
Umaithurai was hiding in this fort for some time. Also the Abirami Amman was
also there up in the fort before she was taken down to Kalahateeswara swami
temple. The latest generation know this temple by name Abirami Amman Kovil,
but for records it is Gnananbiga Samedha kalahateeswara Swami temple (shh
Included my native also in the list)

    2. Chengi Fort near Tiruvannamalai

  • Nice welcome effort. Please start a new thread only for the addition of
forts. Later on it can be easily converted to a database as all info
will be available in one place.

  • Some more forts of tamil nadu

    Palayamkottai
Vattakottai Fort - Near Kanyakumari (Circular Fort)
    Salem Fort
    Tippu Sultan's fort, Namakkal
    Omalur Kottai, Omalur

Kottai (Fort) in just name (no known forts in the place):
    Kottaikkadu, Tuticorin district
    PALAYA KOTTAI, Kangeyam
Erode Mud Fort (leveled in the past 200 years)
    Pattukkottai
Kottai Medu, Near Kalipatti/Mallasamudram Tiruchengode Taluk, Namakkal
    district
    Kattu Kotai near Attur
Kottai Theru, Aragalur, (Magadai Mandalam) Salem District
    Kottai-malai, near Narthamalai, Trichy
    Aranthangi, Pudukkottai
    Thirumayam, Pudukkottai
    Panchalamkurichy fort

Curious: If pudhukottai is 'new fort' what/where/who/when was the
'old' fort? (Is palaya kottai near Kangeyam the place?). Does the
ruins of the old fort still exist? Is the old fort gone over
time/human activities? Wouldn't there be some records (Literary,
    Archeological, Epigraphical, Numismatic).
