    sathya bama's victory over narakasura

    2) shaivaites for
    This is the day Lord Shiva accepted Shakti into the left half of the
    form and appeared as Ardhanarishvara.

    3) sikhs for

    the foundation of the golden temple was laid on a diwali day 1577

    4) jains for

    mahavira attained nirvana on diwali

    reminds me of a riddle they used to ask

    where did rama go for his thalai diwali?
    the answer was there was no diwali during his avatar.
